Thumping/Clunking under hard acceleration noise?
Miles: 38K
Trans: DCT Year: 2013 CEL: None Hard acceleration causes a thumping or clunking noise when in first gear (I've only ever noticed it in first at least). You can hear it thump/clunk three or four times in rapid succession and go away after you get into second gear or higher RPM bands in first. I have a feeling it might be the Giubo (shaft flex disc), but can't get to my house to put it on the lift for another 3 weeks, wondering if I should just order the part now? I realize it could be a multitude of things... Drive shaft u-joint - I've heard this is more of a Clinging/Dinging sound, like a metal bell of sorts - my sound is a THUMP THUMP THUMP. Trans/Engine Mounts - Need to inspect. Drive Shaft Support bearing - this COULD be the issue, but I feel it's more toward the front of the car and not behind me where the support bearing is located. Exhaust hanger has come lose - hitting on one of the shafts (drive or axle depending on where it's hanging down/come loose). Axle shaft sheared a bolt/drive shaft sheared a bolt - will need to inspect but I doubt it's this. I don't have any issues buying some of these parts now, but wanted to see what the community might say to help narrow it down. I'm 70-80% sure it's the Giubo, but I could get under it and see a bolt has snapped or it's the support bearing. Thoughts? Thanks! |

Not really, I've felt, heard, and had this happen in another M3 so it's pretty easy to determine and wanted some input.
I'm unsure of what the sound would help you achieve? I've literally given you exact description and counter descriptions of the various other noises... I'll just go it alone, thanks anyways. *Edit* I'm not trying to be dismissive, I'm just looking for guys who have replaced the giubo before; it's a very distinct sound compared to the other sounds around/in the car. Again, sorry, was super tired last night and not in the best mood, my apologies.
I'm now 90% sure it's the giubo after doing some test runs last night and will be ordering. I appreciate your help though and thank you for the input, sorry again! |

Specifically what about the diff? Sheared bolt, broken diff teeth?
How you gonna make a statement like that and not give details haha!? |

Sorry about that lol. To be more fair it wasn't diagnosed to the exact failure. BMW under warranty basically replaced everything except the diff. That's the only thing that was left.

I had a sound like what you're describing it would appear only at low gear and speed. Mine turned out to be a part of the heat shield simply a little bent and the drive shaft was hitting it. May not be your issue but it's an easy and free fix and check up.

Diff mounts could solve it permanently, but it usually only happens in cold weather, so I know how it happens now and I just avoid super hard acceleration in cold weather. Guibo aren't that expensive so it could be easy to install and solid diff mounts aren't as easy to install but could also fix your issue. Hope you get it fixed or find out! -Duke |

Awesome, I just rebuilt the diff and put in new diff bushings so I am thinking it is either guibo or cv joints so we will see. Thanks for the response.
