Scrub Talk

Hey y'all!

After dealing with 4 RT660 tire failures (delamination after 7-8 heat cycles on 2 tires and the splitting issue which turned into chunking on 2 other tires) I'm quite annoyed... So this has me thinking of just grabbing scrubs online or from a local race team.

I've never run slicks and was debating between take-off Hoosier A7/R7s from UsedRacingTires.com or Pirelli DHs which are much easier for me to source.

My main goal is longevity and pace a close 2nd... Like everyone else here

2 questions:

1. Anyone have experience sourcing tires from UsedRacingTires?
2. Does anyone have experience with Pirelli DHs lifespan and pace compared to newer super 200tw tires?

How do you define longevity?

Well my last set of RT660s were dead (due to the damn splitting issue) within 8 heat cycles so I'd be happy with 12-15 HCs out of lightly used scrubs since they're <50% the price of most super-200 tires.

Have you tried anything other than a 200tw tire? There are other good options like Toyo RRs, NT01s, and the F1 3Rs.

The pace of a slick is going to be a lot faster than any 200tw tire, but will heat cycle out a lot faster.

I'm trying out fresh NT01s tomorrow and Tuesday at Laguna. Was cross shopping the Falkens, good to hear the feedback. I'd personally check out NT01 or ECF.

It's hit or miss. Might last a day, might last two, might be worse than US General. 🤣

All the tire companies seem to just do one mass production run for each year then they run out. I've kept my eyes out for the falkens/ECF/RS4 tires when available.

I've been really happy with the ECF tires. Will probably buy another round after using up my spare tires.

I've run NT01s a few times in the past and they were decent but I didn't love their steering feel on track, honestly I was fine with the RT660s when they lasted 5-6 events but this delamination issue has dropped their life to 2-3 events max over my last 2 sets which is absurd.

I might be stupid and try the new RE71RS as they're $100 off at TireRack ($275/tire). Assuming they're similar in wear characteristics to the OG RE71Rs I'd be fine getting 6 days out of them as that's 2-3 sets a year.

Another option is RE71RS on one set of tires for the morning while the track is cool and scrubs for the afternoon when I typically overheat 200tws.

For folks who have picked up scrubs from UsedRacingTires.com, how many days were you able to get out of their used Pirelli or Hankooks?

Yeah I've run some R comps in the past but not many of them, was looking at the Goodyear Supercar 3Rs but I could just run A052s to get a similar pace/wear right?. (Maybe less greasy at the end of sessions).

The 3R's are going to be a decent bit faster than the A052's with better wear and heat tolerance. The only characteristic the A052's have that's better than the 3R's is warm up time. The 3R's are going to take an extra lap or so to get sticky.

How are the non-R versions of the Goodyear Supercar Tires?

Not idea. I've spent a lot of time reading reviews of many of the R compound tires, but haven't looked into the non-R version.

Hmm might need to look more into those, I'm leaning towards trying the new Nexens since I occasionally street drive the car when I don't want to pack up the trailer.

I'll probably just pickup a set of Nexens/RE71RS + a set of DH scrubs for my other wheels and switch them if I'm street driving to the track - would be nice to know the performance delta between the two also.

From my track experience, scrubs from usedracingtires.com such as R7, Pirelli DH, Yokohama slicks are fast but you’ll be lucky to get 8-10 heat cycles out of them. It’s $740 a set for basically a track weekend.

If you want a tire that has a long life, it is quite fast and gradually drops off after 16 cycles, Toyo RR is what you want. They’re good for at least 18-20 cycles with no prob. These are close to $1400/set shipped. Trackdaytire.com

It’s The same old dilemma, if you want fast you gotta give up longevity. Cannot have longevity and performance in one tire.

Good luck.
Yeah I decided to grab the new Nexen Sport-R tires, they seem to provide RT660 pace with 1.5-2x the lifespan due to the 660 tread splitting issue (if the few reviews are too be trusted).

I'll likely try the new RE71RS next unless these Nexens blow the 660s out of the water.

All I want is an OG RE71R! I just ran a 2yr old set of my street driven RE71Rs that are close to the cords and was only 0.7sec off sticker RT660s. :

How much do scrubs go for? I have one set of Yokohama slicks mounted on brand new EC-7 and another set of DHF Pirelli slicks that are loose.

Like $400-600 depending on your source.

Scrubs aren't a bad option, just need to find a good and reliable source.

IMPORTANT!!! Be sure to mount them inside out. Most racing series are camber limited so they have outer edge wear. Your street car is also likely to be camber limited. Mount them with the colored lettering towards the inside.

I've also found that driving has a huge impact on tire life and when a tire heat cycles out.
