Tires for newbie to the tracks...

Thinking of tires for next year and can't decide if I want a street level tire or move up to something like a Hankook RS4s.

Stock brakes and stock suspension, will R Compounds overwhelm this setup? Other choice would be Firehawk Indy500 or PS4S.

Don't do Firehawk or PS4's on track. You'll go 2 - 3 laps and your tires will be melting. I know I've e done both. If you are in the beginner group then maybe you'll be good for an additional lap. You want to go with something in the R compound category.

Yah I'm leaning that route maybe Hankook rs4 since car will get limited time on streets anyway.

Thanks!

Kumho V730s

begginer-friendly 200TW, low price point. 275/35/18 option.

RS4s are great. Conti ECF up there too, but they run wider than advertised.
RE71RS is great. RT615 is decent, RT660 better.

You will destroy the 4S on track even with a good alignment. Anyone who says otherwise is not driving hard enough.

Look at the rubber guys are running in Intermediate and Advanced groups. You won't see one car properly set up that's running 4S.

For a beginner that's way under pace, then MAYBE you can get away with it. If you progress quickly you'll be reordering on TireRack before you have time to even think about it.

The RS4 is a beginner friendly track tire. RT660 is better if they have the sizes you want.

The Goodyear Supercar 3 is better than RS4 and around the RT660 if you're looking for something for a big heavy car like the M3. Also very street friendly compared to other 200tw tires.

I'll go against the grain here.
If you're really a newb, I'd stick with a decent street tire. You'll wear out the outer edge on track and the inner edge daily driving. You'll learn the limitations of the tire, and they'll break away smoothly and safely. They also won't cover up bad driving like 200tw tires will. You'll learn to be smoother and your tires will last longer.
Then as you reach the limits of the street tire, you'll be able to make the most of the 200tw tires mentioned above.
Another tires I'd throw out there is the NT05... if they still make them. Cheap and lasts a while. Enough grip for a newb to intermediate who drives smoothly.

I've seen many instructors of PS2 fly around a track back in the day. They were smooth and their tires lasted decently.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I agree with this. When I started the e36 m3 was new and fast intermediates and advanced drivers used the Toyo RA1 which is slower than many 200tw “street” tires.
A decent instructor will be aware of the tires getting greasy and will have you back off. When you can manage the car at a lower limit then you are ready for the faster tires.

Back then people would think it’s nuts to send a true newbie on track with over 400hp and sticky tires.
