Bbs FI 18” - 255/35 and 285/30 ?

From reading I have seen most people running 265/35 and 295/30 tire sizes on squared 9.5/10.5 inch 18” wheel setups.

I’m wondering if anyone runs a 255/35 and 285/30 setup?

This is the gts tire size (in 19 inch) and has the same stagger as the 265-295 setup.

The other reason it appeals to me is that I really like the yoko ad08r for a dual purpose street / track tire, and it doesn’t come in 265/35 and 295/30.

Anyone have any feedback on this, or thoughts?

That’s ~1” smaller diameter than GTS with same widths. ~24.8” vs ~25.9” diameter. Ground clearance (and center of gravity) will be lowered about half an inch so keep that in mind if scraping on stuff is a concern

I think handling wise it’d work fine especially with the Yokohama which runs very wide. The gearing change from the 285/30-18 is significant so keep that in mind too. You’ll be shifting more and earlier than a stockish size tire, and running higher rpm on the highway in top gear at the same actual road speed. Indicated road speed inside the car will be off by a couple extra mph as well. None of that is that big of a deal.

Truly analogous to GTS size would be 255/40-18 and 285/35-18

285/30/18 or 295/30/18 has the effect of changing the gearing on a 6MT from 3.85 to about 4.10. 285/35/18 is about like stock, as is 265/35/18 up front.

Both of you guys, thanks for tje response. I’m almost embarrassed that I didn’t consider the relatively significant gearing impact. I didn’t think it would be as significant, so great intel

Since this isn’t my dd and doesn’t see much highway tome, do you guys think there is an issue running these sizes? Will the gearing make the car annoying to drive on the street / track? 4.10 fears were an upgrade on the e46 m3 iirc.

Would a 255/275 35 setup be better? Still short, but not as short. Would need to run Dunlop z3 tires in that case.

Car is used Mostly street driving for fun and a handful of track days per year for fun.

Not too worried about ground clearance as the car is in stock zcp suspension.

I've never gone that short so I can't cant comment first hand, but on the 6MT which really would benefit from a significantly shorter 3rd/4th gear gear in most track situations, I think it'd improve the car especially in <60mph corners. Shortest rear I've run was the 295/30-18 Hoosier which was 25.3" but that's so far away from what we're talking about I'm not sure it's relevant, it's not like I was tooling around town on that tire

On the street, only you can decide if it's worth it, but I'd think you'd just change your shift patterns a bit and never notice until you're cruising on the highway a couple hundred rpm higher than you used to. The tire tread and construction will make a way bigger impact on whether you can stand it from a noise/harshness/rain performance standpoint than what size you're on IMO

I know there are plenty of people who have used this size on this car with good results it's not like you're blazing any trails if that's what you're worried about

I have been running 295/30/18 street tires for about a year. Had 285/35/18 before. I don’t really notice any difference in either acceleration in gear or highway rpm, but there is some because GPS shows my highway speed as a maybe 5 mph lower than the speedometer when going about 80. I’d have to pay closer attention to give the exact difference but you can estimate it with a hearing calculator like the one in the technical section of diffs online dot com. Just plug in your tire size and 6th gear ratio.
