I'm also in MD and will be looking for kit probably next summer. Would love to see/hear the car once the kit is installed.

If you can install one ...you can install another. I would buy new if you are concerned with the install. Buying used the seller may leave out a part or two. Have you kept up with PM stuff? After installing my kit I would tell you to replace the parts the fail under the plenum while you are there. After I installed mine, I had to replace the Idle Control Valve, Fuel Tank Breather Valve and a starter (Well the starter is a real PIA but it can be done at home). While you are in there and if these parts haven't been changed it a good idea to do so when installing. Also, have you done your TA's yet? What area in Md are you in?

The VF kit is not hard to install but there are some things that they don’t specify on the instructions, but you figure them out easy. Thats my thread on a VF595 and recently installed a 96.5mm pulley from ESS.

For what its worth, I installed my vf kit in my driveway over the course of a weekend. No issues and no fit and finish issues.
I like the fact that the vf manifold isnt fully welded, thus allowing you to swap out the heat exchanger of ot ever goes bad and leaks (ess has these issues)and also the manifold doesnt need tie down straps to prevent it from lifting under boost. The vf kits also come with slightly larger injectors over the ess kits, the vf utilizes the same fueling for each level. But to each his/her own. Gl with the search and welcome to the boosted s65 club. |

Yup, Injectors are 640cc. Took me about 2 days working like 5hrs each day to finish it.

Aside from a SC kit, what else would one need to upgrade? Injectors? Cams? Anything?
Can I run an SC with stock cats to pass smog? |

I believe you'd have to upgrade the injectors and rod bearings but you wouldn't pass the visual inspection in smog when running an SC kit.

If you buy it new its a plug and play with nothing else needed and you can run with stock cats but not recommended. Sucks to be in CA but I don’t think its “legal”.

Ya meanwhile in California while property crime and violent crime is skyrocketing, we've had an increase in these gung-ho hero cops that pull people over just to check their exhaust and pop the hood for illegal mods. It's ridiculous.

You still need to out source a tune ($1,000) and maybe previous owner fuck£d up something on the kit when removed and you might have to replace a piece or two, also how did the previous owner keep up with the maintenance on the S/C unit.

One problem with used kits is that sellers want way too much money for them. Always add $1000 for the tune, plus save some money in case you need to replace some hoses or clamps or an air filter or even rebuild the blower. A new ESS VT625 is $7295. All the time you see people selling used kits for $5000 or more. Once you add $1000 for a new tune you are only $1300 off a new kit that has a warranty, all new parts and comes with a tune.
I would not buy a used kit unless it was 1/3 to 1/2 less than a new kit after factoring in the purchase of a tune. I went the used kit route with my E36M3 long ago and within a few years had spent more on it than the price of a new kit. |

I believe the 625 kits are being phased out so now would be the time to jump on one. The one advantage of purchasing pre owned is the ability to go with which ever tune you prefer. Ess/vf/ttfs/bpm/alpine/rk |

The ESS G1 kit is $200 more, so phasing out the Vortech kit would not really be an issue. ESS has sold the most kits for these cars. I would be the most confident in its tuning. But certainly, if you require or need an aftermarket tune, there are options.

So I decided to go ahead and just order a brand new ESS G1 Supercharger kit from Vivid racing. I got the kit for 7100 and it was a no brainer for me to pay essentially 1100 more than a used 625 kit (when factoring the cost of a tune). The kit should be here in 2-4 weeks and I will make sure to update after install.

Agree that injectors are the weak link for ESS. I had to upgrade to green giants when I replaced my 96.5mm pulley with a 94mm. Never had any issues with the manifold lifting even at 8psi though, so the tie downs are no more necessary for ESS than they are for VF. My issue with the VF kit is simply that the manifold looks ugly. It's petty, I know, but it looks bulbous and heavy compared to the lean sculpted look of the ESS manifold. The VF headunit bracket is also an inferior design and thus more difficult to install.
