When you've finished click on "save playlist". The playlist will be saved to <user name>/Music/Playlists. Go there, find the playlist (make sure it has been saved as a .m3u file) you have created and copy it to the root directory of your USB drive. Done.

Thanks to GeriFix for the above insight.
I know I am replying to an old post but I just wanted to say thank you for providing this very helpful (and otherwise impossible to find) info. I had almost given up...

What is the current best option for a drive. The Corsair 32GB are now 65$ and HDD are likely close in price. I'm assuming the Flash Drive will be much faster. Is that the case? If I don't need more than 32GB storage am I better off with a flash drive? Looking for current recommendations.

Also would like to know what the preferred codec is? WMA lossless should be the best sound wise, but does the Idrive like it. Is it OK to have a mixture of codecs and compression rates on the drive?

Takes a few seconds in my 08 idrive. It will fit as it is, but if you cut the top portion with a sharp knife it will not even touch your armrest.

Really? Nice! How much music do you have on your drive? I have 38GB on my current 64GB drive and it takes 7 minutes or so before everything is indexed. Drives me up the wall!

Im assuming there is no album art displayed on the iDrive when using a flash drive instead of a dedicated ipod? I plan to commit a devise (ipod or flash drive) to music duty inside my armrest and am wondering if I would lose the album art tht I have now when I connect my iPhone via a usb cord.

You will get full album art through a flash drive.
