Any chance you have more pictures of bearings from the other cylinders? or was this the only one pulled?

Maybe this has been asked, but are you guys running the newer Mobil 0w-40FS version which I believe isn't BLW LL 01 rated. I believe this rating really only effects long term drain intervals...

And yes, extended clearance is for thick oil, but main bearings is stock anyway, so it was better to serve them also. |

well, driving style is street and track up to 120C, change interval is 10,000 kms (and oil looks like it could run even more), no lab testing, car is NA on BPM tune. nothing military as I love to say

LL01 is BMW's certification. With any formulation change, this means recertifying the oil with BMW. This is expensive and appears to be something that Mobil 1 isn't considering important from a marketing perspective.

I missed these when you first posted, but those look outstanding. Exactly what a plan bearing should look like when properly lubricated. Similar to a 280k mile M62 from and X5 I looked at. It had more wear, but still not through any layers.

Because people would much rather focus on the evidence that supports their overblown theories of "OMG ROD BEARINGS WILL EXPLODE ON EVERY S65".

Well those are BE bearings so if anything those pictures should feed into the OEM bearing hysteria quite well. I don't think we've ever seen pics of OEM bearings that looked that clean.

Lots of people have tried thinner oils and nobody has posted photos of OEM bearings that look like anything close to this after coming out of an S65... In fact there was never any improvement actually correlated to the use of thinner oils.

There are some people who changed to 0W40 after several years of 10W60 on original bearings, and later changed bearings and found the bearings had significant wear. But 0W40 cannot reverse wear from 10W60. You would need people who used 0W40 with original bearings from new.
Some of us have run 0W40 since changing bearings with original or wpc treated bmw bearings, but we have not changed them again so we don’t know how they look. The only example I read of is from jcolley who had to re-rebuild an S85 or two that failed again after changing to wpc treated stock and/or thinner oil. When people start changing bearings for a second time, we will know more. With this latest example of BE bearing after 50km, we don’t know whether the 0W40 or reduced clearance is what helped it look great. Could be some of both. It might also be proof that 0W40 works fine in these motors. |

Consumption on the RL 5w50 really has dropped to near-zero. I won't go lighter than this now that I have the BE bearings in given their recommendation and the slight increase in clearance. My car now has 110,000 miles on it. Bearings were changed after a spike in lead on the oil analysis on two successive changes, at 102,500 approximately, and I've had two changes since then with no consumption at all. Going to run this change to my usual interval of 6-7k miles and see what it does. I am no longer a 0w40 Mobil 1 fan after dealing with the consumption. It may not hurt anything, but it's annoying, and I'd rather spend the extra money on the oil than have to top up the oil every 2,000 miles. YMMV
