to OP: i will never own a DCT version if a 3 pedal version is available, and i drive in heavy southern California traffic on a daily basis. a car like the m3 with 3 pedals is pure joy.

I had a 2008 6MT since 2008 and just received my 2013 DCT comp pack M3 last week and all I can say is. WoW!!!

Ive always been a 6MT guy but was not ever really impressed or disappointed with the 6mt it was fine and that's it.

As far as the DCT... WOW!!! No regrets and I absolutely love it. I had never driven a DCT except for a short test drive that made me order my new one in DCT. I was afraid I may not like it but I absolutely LOVE it. This car feels completely different as a DCT. It's like a have a completely different type of car all thanks to this incredible tranny.

In my opinion this car is great as a 6MT but is much better with the DCT and I always drive it in manual mode it's just that amazing, fun an intoxicating!!!

I am looking to pick up another E92 M3, my previous was a 6MT...and now wondering about the DCT for something different.

The only problem I have with the DCT is that the paddles move with the steering wheel ! I drive a mix of city and twisty country roads....and I find that with wheel mounted paddles (such as on my wife's ML350) that my right hand is bent to hell under the steering wheel while make a sharp turn and trying to shift up out of 1st or 2nd. This totally un-natural hand position is a non-issue with 6MT, as I let the wheel slide through my left hand and shift with the stick in my right.

Am I driving DCT wrong?! Lol. Hoping someone can shed light on this when making tight turns. I want to shift while turning also!

That is incorrect. It's a good way to unbalance the car and send yourself into traffic.

Sometimes I wish I had a dct, mainly after I've been riding my motorcycle equipped with shift assist. The m3 was designed for the dct but the manual is more engaging and I love having three pedals it just feels right..

You shouldn't be shifting in any corners with either transmission but to each there own..

Once in manual mode, you can just pull the stick back to upshift, and push forward to downshift. Seems much more natural to me when compared to porsche’s PDK which is the opposite.

There are two types of drivers;
1 drivers that like to bang tranny (6MT)
2 drivers that like to get banged by tranny (DCT)

I have DCT but have owned some good 6 mt— i.e. s2000. For me DCT in e92 M3 is the best out other similar transmissions (audi s4, golf r etc). It feels more mechanical and the orientation of the shifter (down for upshift) is the way it should be unlike in the Audi's. Combined with the fact that 6sp in e92 is not up to par with some of the best made it an easy decision for me

Has anyone driven both the 6spds in the 08s and 09s+? I did not like the feel of the 08 at all, felt very notchey and the clutch pedal travel sucked. Like to know if the 09s improved at all.

I had a rebuild diff with ZF lsd installed on my MT E90 M3, this helpeld shift quality alot!
Old diff had play and and bearings made noise.

Now full throttle shifts are better and smoother.

The steering ratio is 12.5 to 1 so you won't be turning the steering wheel near as much as the ML350. Plus you can always use the center console shifter to go up or down a gear even when in auto mode. I use it sometimes turning right when street driving, but never need to use it on the track.

I have a my13.5 MT e92, with an Auto Solutions SSK with a clutch stop, this combination transforms the car and makes it that much better to drive.
I’d take this over a DCT any day, also manual m3’s tend to hold their value better.

My current E9x is the 4th one I've owned, and the 3rd DCT. It is low mileage, DCT, has every option and some enhancements like a harrrop supercharger. It is fun as hell to drive, but doesn't hold a candle to my previous M3 which was a base 6 speed.

My only regret is not waiting for the ultimate 6 speed version of my car. DCT is just a boring driving experience.

This. I always use the stick when shifting in corners, much more comfy than trying to keep track of where the freakin' paddles disappeared… Love the DCT.

I have the 6MT but think I would prefer the DCT. I have mistly owned MT because they have historically been the higher performance option, but today’s autos and DCT or equivalent outperform MTs. The 6MT does give you something to do, but as I have gotten older, working to drive the car is not as fun.

My next car will be auto/DCT and AWD. I want the AWD to put the power down under more conditions — I drive in cold when tires have less grip and in rain and snow. Plus my next car will have more power so warm weather traction would also be an issue.

I actually like the GS6-53 for an MT. It shifts smoothly. I just put one from an 08 335 into my turbo 99M3, which had broken a couple of ZF320.
