AIM does not decode IAT on the BMW CAN bus. You get ambient air temps, coolant temps and oil temps. They have DCT temp listed as an option but it does not work....yet.

Brake pad wear question.. I had some significant tapering of my pads after some 2 days at laguna seca and 1 day at Sonoma. When I pulled them out one side was tapered down to nearly backing plate while the other side was still as thick as the backing plate.

Is this a cause for concern? Prior pads wore much more evenly. Could it be a sign of needing caliper/piston rebuild? I am running a 380mm/ 6 piston kit up front and also BBK in rear. Have run about 20-24 track days with the BBK so far and bought it lightly used

Let me guess, inner front passenger side is the most worn?

Actually.. the outer pads were getting faster wear. Taper was the same on inside/outside pads

Interesting. Usually it's from turn two... hard braking then a relatively long left turn that shields the inner passenger side from much airflow.
Did you have any sort of venting going to the brakes?

roastbeef No venting. I figure uneven wear between driver/passenger side may be due to lack of airflow, but this tapered pad wear on pads is new to me!

Oooh, you mean like one side of the same pad is low while the other side has meat. Now the pad is shaped like a door stop?

Are all the pistons on your bbk the same size?

The only way this wear happens is if the pad is still making contact on the rotor when it shouldn't be. Either one or more pistons aren't working properly or the pad is getting stuck on something. Should be easy to rule out the pad getting stuck at least.

Pics or it didn't happen.

i think he has a rotora bbk, and it doesn't have tapered pistons. so one piston is pushing harder than the others.

New tires were in order today. Used up the PSS daily driving on negative camber (about 10k miles) and autocrossing. Wanted PS4Sís anyway haha. Got the new set installed just in time to drive the Twisted Sisters this weekend.

Just one side getting it = problem with the brake caliper or a really bad wheel bearing. Most likely the brake caliper has a sticking/stuck piston.

Thanks guys! I'm going to get caliper rebuilds done on all 4 corners. Rotora sells rebuild kits for front+rear and piston replacements as optional. Think I should just get all pistons replaced while we're at it? Or wait till we find out when the shop opens up the calipers?

There might not be anything wrong with them, it might just be uneven piston pressure. Some kits have different sized pistons to help prevent this.

I'm up in Carmel on a weekend vacation and I stumbled upon a place called Light + Shadows. It's a fine art gallery focused on motor sports. I couldn't take any photos inside, but I did snap a quick photo from the outside last night. They stick a large collection of 1/8th scale amalgam model cars. They also have 1/16th scales as well. The one-off 1/8th scales can range from $8k-$70k.
The detail is mind blowing. Unfortunately, I'm not a member of more money than brains club yet.

Those Amalgam models are insane. I've never seen one in real life... You can actually get them to make a model of your own car if you pay for the development

They are incredible in person. It feels like you're looking at the real thing, the only thing that's missing is the smell of hot metal and oil.
The 1/16th scale start at around $675, but there is no engine, just exterior.

I make a living of complexed data center technology. I am accustom to complexity and complexity does not intimidate me.

However, the complexity of car technology including power, suspension, grip, physics, feel, intuition is endless.

One thing in the computer field is that at some point, when you get it right, it will stay that way for a reasonable amount of time.

Managing computer networks is a bit more dynamically complexed because the interaction between streams of information may effect each other in a non linear way.

But...the fact that every track day has its own variables, the tires are not the same, you may start with a fresh set, you may start with a used set. The temp will be different, the surface will be different etc etc. Each variable has its own setting, and the interaction among the variables is not linear.

I am fascinated with the infinite complexity but the fact is that as a non professional I will have to settle for only understanding the tip of the iceberg.

Since I measure every lap, whatever I try, has a result. It is either 1:36 at NYST, or it is not. I am not complaining, I enjoy the process.

This weekend, I was instructing in the novice group. The goal was not to show them how to go fast. I am not qualified for that. The goal was to explain the relationship between the throttle, brakes, steering angle, location of the car on the track and the angle of the car at the same location.

Trying to explain that to a first timer make you realize how complex the interaction between all your body parts are.

From engineering point of view, a car is one of the great human invention. It brings so much of human ability to harness the laws of physics into a machine. Driving a car on the track heighten what the machine can do.

Last time horses, dogs, elephants and giraffes try to put together a car, it drove into a ditch, if I remember correctly.
