I installed the hotter thermostat recently. When the engine is hot, the temp gauge is reading slightly higher, probably around 10 degrees but it’s hard to tell exactly how much due to the partial grading of the gauge. The fan is definitely running more often.

As for benefits, I will need more to to tell. The car is probably is warming up faster. I have not driven enough to measure mpg or oil consumption but should know within a few months.

Can't see this being of use to anyone other than those staying in cold climates year long.

I did the OEM thermostat. Didn't wanna deal with all that. It makes sense if you have upgraded cooling.

Because it's a 100% Ester oil, the cold viscosity is lower than 10w60 retains its shear strength at 270*F whereas 10w60 will shear down to a 40 weight at those temps. It's all around a better oil. It's not all about the numbers on the bottle.

Hmm I use Motul also, but 7L of 10W60 and 2L of 5W40 as dparm recommended with Motul

OEM coolant thermostat opens at 179f. The 880090 Motorrad is 190f. They also make 180f and 170f thermostats. We've used ones from Stant and Gates here at our shop as well.

Engine oil needs to reach at least 212f to be able to burn off condensates etc and if the engine/oil can't do so then your oil suffers. If your oil suffers, your engine suffers. If the oem coolant thermostat opens at 179 then the engine is taking longer to get the oil to that 212. If you replace the tstat to a 190 then you reduce that window and in a street car the engine can potentially get to temp faster"

I did the thermostat yesterday in my car. It was a last minute decision while I was in there. Only one I could find locally was a 170 degree, how big of a deal is this? Should I be concerned?

Bump

Would like to hear of anyone's experience changing to the Motorrad 880090 t-stat and 5w50.

I live in So Cal and temps never get below 40 degrees F.

More curious about the 5w50 actually...

I installed the T-Stat on my friends E60 M5 and during the day is when his fan constantly runs after the cars been turned off. At night when the temps are around usually 10-13C the fan doesn't turn on after the cars been shut off

It's almost like the DME can't figure out why the engine is so damn much hotter.

Testing must have been done in the winter, I can't see how this could be good in the summer months or for anyone here in FL or warmer states.

It looks like Troy Jeup is located in Michigan. This thermostat is probably more suitable for applications in that part of the country vs. warm weather states.

That said, does anyone know if I keep stock thermostat but switch to the recommended 5w-50 Redline oil if that combination would still be ok?

For cooler weather, 0W40 or 5W40 or 5W40 or 5W50 is fine. For colder weather, a hotter thermostat could help. In NH, where temps are -15 to +95, the hotter thermostat causes the fan to run a lot with the 0W40 that I run and I don’t think it would be much better with the 5W50 that I run now.

Any updates with people running the hotter thermostat? My car takes forever to warm up and I am not sure if it's broken or just the nature of the S65, my climate, and highway driving.

Don't do it, pointless upgrade. S65 just takes a long time to warm up, start car in morning let cold start cycle end and then start driving it. Don't let the car sit to get up to temps

I went back. I ran the thermostat for a year and car feels worlds better with stock thermostat in. Warms up just as quickly, temps are way lower and the fans don't kick in 24/7
