They're so so good for autocross stock I'd be worried about changing them.

I hear a lot of seemingly knowledgable people say the safe bet easy button for autocross that doesn't screw up the car seems to be DS2500 but I've yet to actually try them myself as my car is still sitting inside out of the salt bath, and my car has Stoptechs on it, soooo my feedback on them is worth about as much as you paid for it lol

I've driven the Ferodos on an FS E46, and had them on my STR S2000, and they were fantastic for both. If the stock pads dont cut it, that's what I'll be going with, though people do seem happy with the stock pads.

Yeah, the stockers last so much longer than a race pad, it's hard to change. I got 56k and 4 years of auto-x out of the stockers. They never faded and the cold bite is superior to any Hawk pad I've ever used. Hell, I was replacing my Hawk pads/rotors every year on my WRX. I was just shopping for a new set-up this December and decided to stick with what works, stockers.

Now tires are a totally different story. Has anyone stepped up their game to oust the RE-71s?

If you buy from FCP Euro, they have a lifetime warranty on all parts including wearables. So, for brake pads, if you burn through a set a year left foot braking, you can keep replacing with a single purchase. I bought my Textar (who made the OE pads) pads there.

I don't like the initial bite of the OE pads. It gives a false sense that the car is going to slow quicker than it actually does. I blew braking points for what seemed like forever before I figured them out. Plus they're some of the dirtiest pads I've ever used, on par with Hawk HP+.

Their warranty is even more insane...you don't have to wait for them to wear out. 1/4 worn and you feel like new pads? Send them in and get new ones. That entire suspension arm replacement done last year has 10k street miles of wear and you want it factory fresh for Nationals? Buy a whole new set, remove the 10k mile ones, send them in for full reimbursement. Factory fresh car every year! Etc...

Hawk HPS 5.0 brake pad set for BMW E9x M3 new in boxes - $200 shipped

The stock pads weren't terrible but I now run Hawk HPS pads due to past experience, (and contingency certificates).

Which differential fluid are we using? I'm at 56k miles on original fluid, need to change it before the season starts. Seems like there's an option of non-friction modified fluid, but I'm leaning towards the OEM FM fluid not to mess with the standard diff behavior.

I think non-FM = more lockup earlier, in general, but it's a factory spec fluid, they only later in the run decided to do all-FM fluid iirc and it was a TSB for anyone complaining of noise or groaning to change to FM fluid

Wheel Spacers

Considering wheel spacers for my E92 ZCP.

I currently run 18" ARC-8's front and rear giving me near stock offsets. (Gain 1mm in the front over stock). So I can use a 5mm spacer and stay legal.

But I'm just wondering if it will make any noticeable difference to the handling by adding the 5mm spacers? (10mm of track width only increases it by 0.65%).

If so would you do both front and rear or just one end? And I presume the reduced hub lip isn't an issue? (from 9.5mm to 4.5mm)

I'm on the fence about whether that'll be beneficial for autox in street class. Track width increases but you'll decrease your motion ratio so the suspension will be a little softer, plus you'll make the car relatively wider which hurts slalom ability. Either way I dont think itll be much of a difference

OK folks -- quick inquiry. I'm asking for alignment settings. I've run the following:

max neg. front with zero toe; -1.8 rear camber with 3/16 toe in and

last year some toe out front and less -1.4 rear camber with total 3/16 toe in.

What are others running as I'm about to get the car re-aligned. My feeling is the car cornered better with more rear camber but gave up a bit power down with that setup. On a separate note, just had fresh RE71R's mounted. Looking forward to the season. New pads are in. Getting fluids changed. I'm ready to get back to being real in 2019 after sucking wind in 2018.

Oh really. I thought you ran -1.7 front, 1/16 toe out front, -1.8 rear with 5/32's toe in the rear. At least you did in May of 2018 or am I imagining that.

That was then. The car was a pushy mess. After Spring Nats I went with what I posted above.

Ha. I just aligned my car today:

-1.7 camber, 0 toe front
-2.5 camber, 3/16 total in rear

plan is to start Dinan bar on medium setting.

How badly did i fuck up?

Personally, i would rather have the mid-corner grip than give up corner exit power down confidence.

New question: What does everyone do between runs?

I have normally turned my cars off after a minute or so of running the AC at full blast to get the rad fan running. I am thinking of continuing this same habit with the M3 since rod bearing wear is mostly an issue with cold startup, not startup with warm oil 5 minutes after hard driving i.e. the rod bearings should have plenty of warm oil still coating them.

Thoughts?

I would just use my best judgement depending on weather. There's a lot of oil in there and it holds temp pretty well once warmed up. To me the bigger question was how to get it up to temp before running, especially at national events were you have to be in grid so long before you actually run. My car did not like to build temp just idling.

At Charlotte this weekend, i basically took the car for a drive off site 15-20 minutes before gridding to get it fully up to temperature. Then started it up in grid 20 minutes or so before running. It would basically be a quarter of the way up to temp before starting it in grid doing it this way. I use the electronic oil level to inform me when the oil is sufficiently up to temp. If its reading, it tends to be that the oil is well up to temp.
