if having a square setup is so beneficial, why didn't BMW do that in the first place?
are there any downsides to this type of setup?

This setup is more prone to oversteer. Understeer is safer, therefore skinnier front tires. Also, 275s cost more than 245s haha

Also European regulations require 20mm clearance between the tires and fenders from the factory so snow chains can safely be mounted. Atleast that is what I have heard. I mean BMW could have done a 275f 295r setup from the factory. It would fit, but I believe it wouldn't meet the euro regulations unless they made the fenders even wider.
