My car just turned 7 years old and I had to take it in for emissions test here in Canada in order to renew my license plate sticker and it failed. I had no check engine lights but when i pulled the codes i got p1628. I cleared the code, engine light never came on but when i pulled the codes again, i got the same p1628. The car runs fine. Could this be bank 1 throttle actuator?

Throttle Actuator DIY
Just wanted to update and piggy back off of the original thread.
My M3 went into limp mode and the xmas lights came on. Threw the same code: Bank 1 Throttle actuator, DSC Mal. etc. The part now costs ~$850, luckily i found one for $200 off a parted 40k e92. My friend (e46) and I (e92 @67k) just did the replacement of my e92 throttle actuator bank 1 over the weekend. We referenced the original thread (for the throttle actuator) and a youtube video (removal of the plenum); all in all it was a pretty simple job if you have some prior experience with working under the hood. The toughest part for me was finding enough room to remove the original actuator. Essential tools needed like W/// said and I agree are; the magnetic pick-up tool, long (thin) ratchet extensions and a fault code reader (Creator C110). I have been driving with the new actuator with no issues so I don't think BMW have to reprogram the computer. So if you're thinking of doing this job at home and not pay a shit load in labor, it can certainly be done!! Reference for plenum removal: Plenum removed: https://www.flickr.com/photos/131747...7/16941829498/ Actuator removal: I used a flat head and hammer to gently dislodged this connector. https://www.flickr.com/photos/131747...7/16943427529/ |

fixed under warranty
Hey,
Might have already come up in this thread but wanted to let you know that after getting error 2B15 "throttle actuator malfunction" my local dealer (BMW Portland) replaced it under a 7 year/70K extended emissions warranty. My car is 5 years old with 22K but I use it at the track which may explain why it happened so early. Anyway, for any of you that run into this you should see if you can catch the freebie before shelling out on new parts etc. |

bank 1 dead
All of a sudden yesterday immediately at startup I got engine error and limp mode. Coincidentally car was going for an oil change at dealer that morning. They found several codes for bank 1 and 2 but also some items related to low voltage due to possible weak battery and "accessory use with vehicle off" (I do use a 12V vacuum, but always with engine running)
They charged up the battery cleared codes and took a drive, bank 1 errors returned within 1 mile. The want to replace bank 1 TB actuator now. Quoting $2100, 7.5 hours of labor. Sounds like a fairly typical price though ridiculous on the book labor time for this job. Same price at the dealer across town. Should I clear the codes a few times and make sure this is a real and persistent problem? What do you guys think? Or is is virtually guaranteed to return? Thanks, I'm a very new poster here, just bought Jerez Black E90 with 6MT in January 2008 with 31K milles (now has 37K since I drove it cross country) here is a recent pic after Wolfgang swirl remover 3.0. |

If it can't be done under warranty and you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, find an Indy shop that will. This is not a difficult task.

If you can DIY, you might be able to do it yourself; it doesn't take 7.5 hours.

It didn't work for me in Seattle but grant.rochelle had some luck there. Also, it's an easy DIY thanks to W/// . Dealers 7.5 hours of labor is a joke. I've done both mine.....and if you were to put a stop watch on me....I can probably do it in 30 mins. Good Luck!

Emissions warranty
The federal & California warranties differ slightly (it's actually 8/80 for TBAs):

Well...my Bank 2 just took a dump on me. Good thing the part arrives today, car has been throwing codes all day long during my commute and had to shut it down a few times to reset and make it to the office.
Bank 1 was replaced a year ago by the dealer, but I guess I'm S.O.L. on this one, car just passed 80k miles so no CA warranty either. Thank you for the DIY, I will definitely be using this in the coming days. |

Because the part they already replaced should be under a 2 year warranty.

Well, it was bound to happen. I originally had Bank 1 replaced by the dealer around 65k miles and I knew I was on borrowed time for Bank 2.
Bank 2 decided to let go last week and after ordering the part from ECD (yes, I could have looked other placed but needed the part asap) I was able to swap it using this DIY. A word of caution though, MAKE SURE YOU RECONNECT ALL SENSORS!!! I missed the connector which was just below the harness, between the two TPS modules and drove the car in limp mode for a whole day. It sucked and right when I thought I was sold a defective unit, I popped the plenum off and saw the connector unclipped...after connecting it car was happy. The CEL ended up going away on its own after a day's drive. Oh and of course Bank 2 let go right after 80k miles, so much for CA Warranty huh... Thank you for the guide, it was very helpful |

I needed to replace the Fuel Purge Valve on my E90 M3 and your post was very helpful. Removing the intake plenum was much easier thanks to your efforts!
Thank you, Mike |
