How to install BMW TPMS

We thought that it would help out them members to go over the correct way to install TPMS in most aftermarket and OEM wheels. There will be slight differences if you have multi-piece or older wheels that are NOT TPMS friendly. They may require an adapter.

First you will need your new TPMS sensor and correct size valve stem.

You should have an extra washer and holder stick with them valve kit.

Attach Torx valve screw to base of sensor.

Insert valve stem into new wheel. Make sure it is a standard valve stem hole.

Add single washer.

Attach valve stem nut.

For BMW's BERU/HUF TPMS set torque tool to 35in/lbs.

Tighten to torque.

Most shops will have a TPMS testing tool to make sure the sensor is activated properly and ready to perform on your new set of wheels.

Are those single washers sold separately?
I have a spare set of tpms but I don't have those washers

For kmarei, or anyone else looking for replacement parts, we have Tire Rack part # KITBERU. It is a rebuild/installation kit for the Beru (company that makes BMW TPMS) valve, so it includes a couple of washers, a replacement gasket and I believe a valve core also. They run $4.50 per kit plus delivery.

i can't find it on the tire rack website
do you have any pics?
just want to be sure its the right part before i order

Beru part # 1090K All the items shown are what is in there.

We do not have a pic on our site, but found one by google image search for the same part #.

Yes that's what I need
I have the 2 rings on the bottom
I want the 2 flat washers on the top
Any idea what the difference is?
Might as well replace the rubber gasket
Can you please pm me the price of 4 kits shipped to 20194?

FYI..for anyone interested..I used the TPMS from a 2007 335i on a 2011 M3 and worked w/o a problem. I was surprised beacuse I know there was a part number revision after 2010.

does you car have a build date before 09/10?

The tapered washers are for a wheel where the valve stem hole is angled inward, not many vehicles use them.

awesome post. I had an opportunity to watch my friend build a valve stem/tpms kit on my new wheels. My old kit on my lmr didn't fit on my FI.

Question: I just installed a new set in my Apex track wheels. When i got the tires mounted the shop told me I needed to bring the car by so they could mount the wheels and sync them. Is that true? Guess I just pop a wheel off and put an Apex one on but I figured I'd just ask. I figured they would just pick the sensor up wirelessly and you're good, no?

No need to have a shop sync them. You'll get a warning on the iDrive screen, so you reset/initialize, drive around a bit (anywhere from 3 to 10 min's), and it's all green & you're sync'd.

the new orange sensors for a 2013 do not include the washer in the valve stem kit. interesting. will see how it works on a ZCP wheel.

This is a great write up
I have a question though
When you are using new tpms units on the second/third set of wheels, how do you determine that the sensors are indeed functional before getting the tires mounted and balanced...wouldnt it be prudent to check the sensors somehow before completing the tire mounting?
