Enjoy your car
Just curious why you recommend against changing rod bearings vs changing them for preventive maintenance? is there a significant risk if a trust shop does the job correctly?

If your Blackstone oil report is good and your S65 sounds good , why should you replace your bearings ?
We /I saw S65's with 200K+ miles on it, and they still run today with original Oem. bearings !
While others failed with only 6K miles on it ...some had bearing failure twice and run today with their third S65 !
That's why I said the S65 and S85 are like a *German lottery*
Of course the decision is yours...

There is not much risk involved if done by an experienced shop. Have you done a Blackstone oil analyses yet?

I have not done a blackstone analysis yet. i figured i would save the money for the bearing replacement. I already scheduled it with a shop. Bringing it in 3 weeks. I am going to have them get pictures and inspect journals and crank while they are in there. To add to my paranoia , i was pumping some oil out of the oil filter housing because i had overfilled my oil a bit, and i think i found a few very tiny specs of metalic flakes in the oil i pumped out. I did not see any flakes in the oil filter, however i did not cut it open. I am not 100% certain there metalic or if they were already in the drain pan or came from the car. I also finally found another thread discussing the same ticking/flicking problem im having under load here http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...0#post23056270. All this is making it harder and harder to just enjoy the car i love so much. I am hoping the noise is an exhaust leak. Im going to get a blackstone analysis done prior to bearing change and one after.

Oil analysis (and even oil change) is cheap compared to bearing change. The results could tell you to park the car until ready for bearing change for best chance to salvage engine.

Just get it done and feel better if your results show no significant readings.

Your right. i think its a good idea to get an analysis done prior to bearing change and then do another after. That will at least give me some factual information instead of just guess/making up problems.

I sent the oil in to blackstone and its been over two weeks with no response so I had my car towed to the shop just incase to have the bearings done. it should be done sometime next week. I am also having the dipstick welded in.

Why did you get it towed in?

The shop I talked to recommended that. they had a guy with a similar experience drive in and blow his s85 while driving to the shop.

lol, nice scare tactics. You totally could've just driven to the shop. The hysteria is getting out of hand when people are towing their fully functional cars with no signs of bearing failure to the shop .

I agree.

The RB issue is not a myth but the scare-scale is definitely getting out of hand.

Here is to a hope that the OP achieves peaceful nights after the change.

I actually started hearing a separate noise after that from the bottom end passenger side, metallic tapping rpm dependent. My uncle, a motor engineer said it sounded like a rod bearing sound to him. Valuing his opinion and putting stock in the story the shop fed me I towed it in for peace of mind. Shop found no issues and heard no abnormal noises. I am having them do the Be bearings and weld in a dipstick for peace of mind. wont get it back until next week which sucks. I'll post pictures of the bearings when i get them back, proving or disproving my paranoia.

dang

2008 e90 m3 with 51k

had my car inspected today and scheduled to have rod bearings replaced by next week Monday.

My shop has done a dozen of these so far and they said mine was the lowest mileage they have seen by a long shot, most have been 100k range...

I hear it very clear on cold starts and between the 1700-3000 rpm ranges in gear.

when the engine is warm its not as loud but as you can see in the above videos it is very present.

I was hoping it was a heat shield, loose exhaust, or a fan, or something cheap or easy.... but shit....

ill update once I get my car back with another video and costs involved.

There is a definite knocking sound.

Just hope that it's not Rod Bearings.

*********UPDATE + LARGE PHOTO************

2008 with 84k miles
Oil changed religiously
I'm 3rd owner bought at 60k, tracked twice ever (I have no reason to doubt)
I believe I have read before that Blackstone samples (even on an early car) can be inconclusive as they can clearly show an engine in trouble, but cannot prove one is entirely healthy. This is clearly no fault of Blackstone. I would tend to agree with this as I have clearly have worn past multiple layers on 4 of 8 cylinders.

Motivation for this procedure is that I came home and heard the slightest tapping from what seemed to be bottom end that was entirely in rhythm with RPM, and any increase in RPM (oil pressure?) would cause it go to away.

I have 2 oil samples I have not sent in, but below are three cumulative reports ending at 75k, only 9k miles ago. I feel this wear must have occured well starting before 9k miles ago.

This sound exists when you're parked and just revving the engine in those ranges right?

I got my car back from the shop. The faint metalic tap is still there. Shop didnt hear anything abnormal but i had them change the rod bearings preventively anyway and also weld in the bimmerworld dipstick. Heres some pics of the old bearings with 50k on them. I did not think they looked horrible but definitely have some wear. I'm just going to drive and enjoy it.
