I really appreciate you keeping an eye out for blown engines! Thanks. .

Add another to the list, my bosses 2011 competition package with 46k miles had the rod bearings go about 2-3 months ago, just got the car back a month ago.

Nick has been a very open person on the forums for over a decade. If he says he didn't money shift, I have 100% confidence he didn't money shift.

Would one of the tuners here be able to explain how the recorded engine speed function works—is there a date or mileage associated with it? If the OP can prove to the used car dealer that he was not responsible since it did not happen in the last 23 miles or the last week, the dealer may cover it since that is what it was originally offering to do.
Legally, it may be that if the used car dealer bought with no knowledge of an issue and sold the car as is with no warranty, it is not responsible and the OP is stuck with an expensively unfortunate purchase, but I have not looked at the GA equivalent of the lemon law (the OP said there is none). We know bmw is not going to do anything for an out of warranty car, especially now that there is a lawsuit against it alleging that BMW is at fault for engine failures. Back then dealers were telling owners that their cars reached say 8200rpms and "stayed there" for x-seconds. Many were accused of mechanical over-revs. In fact, just revving the engine to the 8k redline would start the timer adding to the TNMAX variable; so every time someone "normally" drove the car through the gears, a bit of TNMAX time accumulated (time spent between 7800-8000). It was then misrepresented to the owner in an attempt to put blame on them. It also turned out that revving over the 8k limit a bit was possible also during normal rev limiter operation. The BMWNA tactic of blaming customers for money-shift-over-revs all fell apart when SMG cars were blowing up in same quantities. In any event, here is the post from Roadfly by Jim way back then -- reiterating that this post is specific to the E46 M3: Quote:

I didn't know if I should start a new thread or use this one.
I have two videos that I will like to share and I need help Identifying ticking noise. The sound is audible when warm but not so when cold. I believe the sound is coming from the passenger side (the curb amplified the sound). The first video is a warm engine the second video is a cold engine. The noise is slightly louder than in the video. I plan on replacing my rod bearings at 60k (41k currently). Last edited by Su37su; 12-11-2017 at 11:00 PM.. |

I'm sorry but your videos are worthless ! You should post a new video.. 1- Warm up your S65. 2- Keep your cam close to the driver side front wheel . 3- Rev. your S65 *slowly* up to 3K rpm's. 4- Repait 3X . Let me know...

May not be the right thread for it, but this seems to be the most comprehensive area for the subject.
Has anyone noticed a correlation with oil temperatures and bearing failure? As an example, the oil temperatures began to rise and then *pop*. Not saying that mine are fine (I've already purchased BE's as preventative maintenance and waiting for them to arrive, however), but I've noticed that my oil temps are always lower than anyone else I talk to. Most seem to be 210*+ constantly whereas mine never seems to even reach 210*. Of course I'm going off of the inaccurate needle on the dash, but I'm assuming I'm somewhere around 190-ish once I'm up to temp. |
