I drove manuals my whole life....every car. Drove this DCT and fell in love...
Hell, I hate manuals now, especially in stop start traffic...I honestly dont miss it at all...it frankly slows this car down. My friend has a E92 M3 w/manual ...beat him every time cause I got em off the go...Im faster and my shifts are smoother...he doesnt stand a chance and hes a good manual driver... We have all seen the diagram showing the driving force of one shift event of MDCT compared to SMG and manual transmissions. We all know the professional tests done that show the DCT outperforming... M3 to me is a sports car, the faster you make it the better IMOP, thats why I always upgraded to short throw shifters. So since speed is key to me...anything that can get me faster wins...its like a built in modification right from the go.....IMOP Last edited by Cool Steel; 05-18-2013 at 11:40 PM.. |

Honestly, who cares what trans you have the M3 is a fantastic car and we should live together in arrogant, harmony, and not argue amoungst ourselves but instead condesend to all those cars that are not M3s.... |

Same one, but ZHP does not light up. I didn't care enough plus I had a spare ZHP laying around. Not like you don't know what the shift patterns are haha

I don't understand why people try to compare the M3 to a race car. They only have 1 goal and that is to go as fast as possible, period.
For me, while performance is obviously important, it's not the only thing I look for in the M3. Don't get me wrong, when it's time to get an M2, I'll probably go DCT. But no way will I not have an MT in my garage.

May I be so bold as to suggest some professional instruction. M-School?, Bonderant?, Skip Barber? Or perhaps your grandma.

The ZHP is much lower than stock and is also weighed. I always thought it was identical to the M5 one, except it's not lit. Whichever one you pick, it's by far the most important mod to the car next to an exhaust. I rank it that high. I bought my car used, but had the stock knob on for about 24 hours before I couldn't take it anymore and hacked it off.

Foil that with the E9X that loves to rev and does so without having to pin the throttle to the floor. The next M3 6MT will likely have rev matching and I agree, at that point, just buy the DCT. |

^ this Or save your money , save the bother, outperform the manual guys w/no instruction....and simply go DCT... then throw some mods with the money you would have spent on M-School and really outperform.... |

To be honest I feel like if you are not very often or even never in a position where milliseconds of performance are crucially important, 6MT is the only way to go. Why else would you buy a sports car? Those feelings and sounds you get rowing through gears or is that just me??
But I can also see that if it is your only car and daily driver, depending on where and what conditions you have to drive it, I could see being forced into a DCT. If you intend to race/track or performance is everything to you than obviously have to go DCT>6MT. I am more about the emotion and satisfaction of MT, even in my daily driving. |

There is nothing as rewarding as having full control of the clutch, rev matching is amazing with a manual esp with a 8,300 rpm engine, there is such a wide band where you can play with with the clutch and getting the engine sound you want anywhere, anytime you please, getting the reward of doing it right or messing things up when you don't. It's that freedom and responsibility to be in full control and not to be computer assisted. The manual transmission is a huge part of my M3 enjoyment. It just more fun. I have tracked the dct. Milliseconds are meaningless unless the car is dedicated to the track. Driving in normal regular traffic or in the city is a joy with the MT, there is a learning curve and that is part of the fun and then becomes second nature. Unless you are regularly stuck in stop and go traffic then you probably got the wrong car for the job to start with, personally i see zero advantage for dct. It's also less desirable as the car ages and more costly to fix. Last edited by V8FunNaturally; 03-12-2014 at 10:44 PM.. |

I have a dct.. But I regret buying one. It obviously is the better shifting gear box, it's faster.. It's a computer. Launch control is always fun and you'll always love those quick shifts, however it doesn't beat driving a manual, in my opinion. I just like having more engagement to the car rather than pressing down on a paddle, or a little plastic shift knob

Getting the 6 spped MT was the deciding factor for me
Hello,
When I was looking at cars last October-November - I originally planned to get another Lexus, a Lexus ISF - but, a friend with a BMW 335i insisted I at least try an M3 before I do the deal. I said only if it has very low miles, has the comp package and a MT. Unbeknownst to me he was scouring all sorts of sites trying to locate one like that for me. Well, we went to Seattle BMW and there it was I got in and although I was a bit worried about driving a MT after not doing so for many years, after easing out of the dealership lot I was hooked !! I love the 6 MT - love being interactive with a car again !! For me, I plan to keep my M3 forever - and when I get another car, I would love to have a M5 w/MT too - but that's a few years away Regarding the DCT - I totally respect that set-up as well, and one of the founders of a company I used to work for got himself a new Porsche Carrera 4S after the sale of the company, his cars is also a MT (7 speed albeit). He now says that if he did it all over again, he would go with the DPK (?) err...whatever Porsche calls it. He went to the Porsche school in Alabama, said that after driving the DPK equipped cars they are simply faster than a human. Cheers, Merlin |

I, as well totally respect the masterpiece that is the M-DCT and all that it is capable of. It actually is really impressive, solely a transmission that can make the car perform and feel that much better. To be able to have a transmission this capable at this price range of a car I think is also such a good deal! You would have to jump to a Porsche.
As M3-S65 said above, those two are the major issues that I am worried about with owning DCT, I do plan to keep my car for a long time as well. 1. Becoming bored with DCT. 2. Repair cost as it ages. Still such a dilemma at times......I am actually planning to buy a new M3 and this question is just killer. |

Drove a DCT. Boring. Bonafide automatic. Even tho it's lightening fast. It's still an automatic. Boring after a week or two. 6MT FTW!

This thread was so predictable... and boring. I hate myself for reading the first 4 pages. My god OP...just get whatever transmission you want. Who cares what other people prefer. You are driving the car. If you want to do a lot of drag racing and want the fastest 1/4 mile (this car isn't for you anyway) or you plan to spend a lot of time on the track honing those lap times by tenths or hundredths of seconds... and like the ability to drink coffee without having to shift when you are in DD mode, get a DCT. Otherwise, get a 6MT. Now I hate myself more for posting in this thread
