Having run the Deka ETX30L that Braille rebadges as its 21 lb battery in my 99M3, I would not run it in my E90M3 unless I lived in a warm climate and did not mind trickle charging it. I live in NH and drive my cars year round and do not want to be bothered with a trickle charger. The ETX30L lasted one year in my 99M3. It did make it through the first winter, but could not handle even the beginning of the second winter.
I pulled it and swapped in a Mini battery. No issues with that in a couple of years. I would consider trying one in my E90M3 although I would not expect it to last more than a couple of years. However, I am not sure I am desperate enough to save 20 lbs to buy a battery that will not last as long as a stock one. I have to think about it since I will be due for a battery -- my stock one is nearly 5 years old and that is a good lifespan for an E90M3. Whatever I buy will be an aftermarket battery since I have no interest in overpaying the dealer and then arguing with them. This is a very common problem these days. I went through it with my wife's 08 535xi. The first dealer ignored my request, replaced a cable instead, and the battery died again days later. We had BMW roadside assistance tow it 40 miles to another dealer, which diagnosed it correctly and replaced the battery. BMW spent twice as much as it should have on that repair. I don't use the first dealer, Tulley in Manchester, NH, anymore since I have no patience for overpriced incompetence that wastes my time. |

There's no way I could do this mod living in NY. It's been sub 30 degrees for a couple of weeks now and not getting warmer. Just started my car after sitting 2 days with stock battery, and she barely cranked over. My dash cluster wasn't even clear (something I've never seen) due to the cold. Sucks cause I'm looking for inexpensive weight savings

I know this is an older thread, but I believe my battery is on the way out (gave me a service warning, clock is losing time, etc).
Is the only downside to not "registering the battery within the DME" that the battery may fail prematurely (3 years instead of 4)? Any negatives on the car itself or electronic system outside the battery in not registering a new battery? I ask as I can go to Advanced Auto and pay $140 and install on my own (and have a multi-year warranty for if it fails) vs. paying $450+ at the dealer inclusive of the re-programming. Thanks. |

Just buy the Autozone or Advance AGM battery and install it yourself. As soon as reasonably possible, clear all adaptions or just the battery adaption to reset it. Find a friend with a good scan tool to do this for you or buy one. As long as the battery is roughly the same size, there is no need to do anything fancier like recoding.

Bringing up a very old thread here.
Today I installed a Braille B3121 battery in my M3. Installation was pretty straightforward; however, I'm having an issue with the voltage. Using the iCarly application I set it as 40AH AGM. My understanding it's 36, but that's the closest option there. I set it, but couldn't register it. No big deal initially, I took it out on a test run with no problems. Then I let it sit for an hour or so, cranked it only to get the "Increased Battery Discharge" error. So I pulled the iCarly app out again tried to verify that it;s showing up as 40AH AGM, then I checked the voltage read out and it was 14.5 volts, which is fine. Does anyone have any idea on getting rid of this increased battery discharge? Last edited by Gbiz; 11-07-2018 at 02:40 PM.. |
