Spare tire options
Quote:
You can certainly carry a Winter wheel, at the expense of reduced luggage capacity and weight. I like the compact spare solution, and I only carry it on trips out of my local area. Luckily, I've never needed to use it.

Tires just blow out sometimes from defects or whatever. It's rare, but it happens. Have you ever considered run-flats? The selection is a bit limited and the ride quality typically gets a bit stiffer, but it's a viable option if you are worried about getting stranded.

I think I'm gonna go with the space saving spare. I already have a jack and torque wrench. It'll also leave room for golf bag on occasion. Maybe it was a freak accident. Just wondering how I can better maintain my tires so I can avoid these blowouts. I almost wish I had hit a pothole, open and shut case. ha!
thanks for the feedback fellas! glad i stumbled onto this thread.

This looks like a good tool to have in the trunk: https://www.amazon.com/WORKPRO-Teles...ench+bmw&psc=1 I just picked up my car and the damaged tire. Looks like the hole is right at the corner where the sidewall meets the contact patch. The tire shop guy told me I hit something hard. I guess that settles that. Road hazard, again... I bought hazard warranty this time, so it'll be covered if this shit happens again. The spare will get me home at least and then I can deal with the replacement at my leisure. I'm thinking of going cheap to Hankook Ventus V12.

I had picked up a BWM jack kit that includes a bar that is best described as a torque bar (can't adjust the torque). With the Bimmerzone spare, I know I won't be waiting long if something happens. I picked it up after getting something in my tire that would not have been fixed with the tire sealant. I bought the spare right after that. Just wish there was a better way to keep it in the trunk.

Has anyone tried a spare from a Cadillac or equinox? Wondering if other cars with. 5x120 and this tire size will work. Spare wheel offsets maybdiffer but curious. eBay has spares from these other cars for dirt cheap!

Additional Option/Solution for Spare Tire for E9x
In looking for spare tire options, I came across this thread which was very helpful. But in doing some additional research, I found what looks to be a better overall solution, and I wanted to get some opinions.
The post is from JohnnW located in the UK (to simplify I'll copy the text and picture below and then provide the link) Here is what he recommended: Quote:

Update: I didn't realize Dackel had already identified the alloy wheel spare tire option ... my apologies to Dackel for missing his post!

New owner, another spare tire option
I've recently acquired an M3 and like br2wdc I'm looking for a spare tire solution.
Here's another one that I found: https://modernspare.com/product/2000...-complete-kit/ If anyone has thoughts on the "modernspare" solution or the one posted by Dackelone please post. Would using the sort of spacer shown be a cause for concern? Last edited by Jonnyz2; 10-19-2020 at 05:30 PM.. Reason: typo |

Welcome Jonnyz2 to the forum and congrats on getting the car!
I ended up getting a similar solution to what was suggested earlier in this thread using the 18" spare rim/spare tire/hub centric ring, and below are the links: BMW 18" Compact Spare Wheel - Genuine BMW 36116768861: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...768861#fitment Continental CST 17 - SIZE: T135/80R18 (on back order currently at TireRack.com): https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...num=38MR8CST17 Circuit Performance 74.1mm OD to 72.56mm ID Black Plastic Polycarbonate Hub Centric Rings: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Note: I added a jack and telescoping lug wrench from Amazon to this solution, and it's provided me huge peace of mind to have this "spare tire kit" available with the hope I never have to use it!

Good question ... the alloy has a shipping weight of 5 lbs, the steel wheel is 16 lbs
For me I didn't think the weight savings justified price difference of $100 for the steel wheel vs. $250 for alloy. I did look into getting a used alloy wheel and there were none available at the time I was looking.

A lighter weight wheel would be an advantage for my wife if she needs to change the tire.
Anyone have an opinion on the spacer used for the "modern spare" solution? As I think about what's easy, or not, for my wife I'm not that keen on her needing to use a spacer. That thought also applies to the centering ring needed with the steel wheel. Another thought occurred to me before on this topic...How important is the wheel diameter match for the rear differential? A 135/70 R18 is 25.4" and the rear tires on my car are 265/35 R 19 which is 26.3". That's nearly an inch which seems significant. If the car needed to be driven 100-200 miles could that cause damage? There are 145/70R18 tires available which are 26". While more expensive, is the closer size match important? Last edited by Jonnyz2; 10-21-2020 at 05:14 PM.. Reason: typo, clarity |

Interesting, I had not considered the possibility my wife would change the tire, because I am 100% certain that she would call me so I could have the honor
I also shared your concerns about a spacer/centering ring, but decided to go with the steel wheel after seeing this video showing how easy the centering ring was to put on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZfSykreemw Quote:

I've always wanted whoever drives my cars and relatives to be self sufficient in case the need requires it.
So, I've taught my wife and three nieces and one nephew all how to change a tire safely and quickly. In the intervening years, we've only needed it once and I was there so I changed it. How's that for luck? |

Smart move to teach wife/others who may need it someday if they don't have cell reception, or don't want to wait hours for an Auto service or tow truck or Uber.
And I hope my luck matches yours Quote:
