Just did this over the past weekend, not too bad, but quite cumbersome on just jack stands (see setup pictured below). FYI, home depot has a 9 gallon concrete mixing pan for only like $6 that's perfect for this (I will be using it for engine oil changes from now on too). One tip I can give is that if you're changing the pan out too, break all the screws loose just a little bit and then start to unscrew either the back or the front and let that whole side open up a few millimeters and it will drain out in a fairly controlled manner. You can even completely remove 1 bolt first and some will drain out of the bolt hole too.
I ended up getting 5.5L out (changing pan + suction filter [not the round one on the side]) and about 5.4L back in. Slightly worrying, but confirmed temperature and even tried tilting the car with the fill hole biased higher up and the car didn't want to take any more fluid. Drove it easy for the first 100 miles then worked into some slow building high revs and finally beat on it hard and haven't had any problems, so I'm feeling good (fingers crossed). Car was on original fluid with ~113k miles. I'll be sending a sample to Blackstone soon and will report back with the results. - |

How about the pan gasket change? I suppose we need to order new pan gasket as well? but in the ecs kit there is not pas gasket it seems?
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-assemble...3220440214kt1/ Also, it seems this kit is using dctf-1 instead of ffl-4 oil? what is up with that? |

Also, I'm pretty sure DCTF-1 is just the BMW name for the fluid. FFL-4 is straight from Pentosin without a little roundel marking on it. |

Correct. DCTF-1 = dual-clutch transmission fluid 1 Some people feel better knowing it's the official BMW fluid, but there is no difference.

I believe that track use would require a shorter drain interval than 50k.
This isn't an auto tranny so this fluid lives a very easy life. It's warmed up quickly and has a robust cooling setup. So the fluid is operated at optimal temperature almost all of the time.

Possibly. Obviously it depends on how much track time. I put 3 track days on top of those 112,000 miles. For my personal situation now, planning on 5-6 track days per year and 30,000 mostly highway miles per year, I wasn't planning on changing it again until about 220,000 miles. Actually I was originally going to wait until 150,000 miles to change the fluid the first time, but the transmission pan started to weep a little bit due to the gasket starting to deteriorate. Of course, I will keep monitoring the gasket and would definitely change early again for that.

Some more lessons learned...
Before you buy the pressure filter, make SURE it comes with the O-ring, lid, and circlip. I bought a VAICO and it just had the o-ring. You could use it but there is a chance the circlip or lid will get screwed up. Then you're in a world of hurt because I can't find the lid or circlip separately. Just buy the genuine BMW kit. You also need a good circlip plier. I bought this from Amazon and it worked amazing... Knipex 4821J31 Internal Angled Precision Retaining Ring Pliers 8.5-Inch

Just finished this up as well. With the info in this thread it was pretty straight forward. I did the pan and both filters as described and it probably took 6 hours end to end (though I spread it across two days and did other things as well so it’s hard to tell exactly). I used the Knipex pliers referenced above and they made the snap ring extremely easy to deal with.
I got about 5.25 liters out and managed to put about 5.5 in, though given that I replaced the filters that doesn’t surprise me. Old fluid is dark brown as shown in some pics in the thread. Car has 105k miles almost all by me and I don’t track the car or drive hard very often. If anyone is in Austin, I have about 250ml of extra fluid if you want it. On a random note, I just ordered the Schwaben scan tool. Anyone know if there is any sort of utility or diagnostic in there to run whatever needs to be run to pump fluid through so you don’t need to have the car idling while adding the second round of fluid? To anyone that recently changed their DCT fluid and also changed the oil pan, I am looking to buy a discarded DCT oil pan. Here's my post in the classified section:

I hear mention that people are changing the o rings on the pipes that you have to move to access the side pressure filter.
Is this needed? Just getting all my bits together to do a change myself. I have 6 litre of fluid Suction filter Pressure filter Shall I order the o rings? Car is 31k miles but changing for piece of mind being supercharged. Thanks |

After you started the car, what was the approximate time it took to get the fluid temp up to 104F from ambient temp.? Did you have enough time to fill the trans with a small hand pump like that?
Regarding the oil pan gasket, instead of buying a new pan, you can buy just the Viton gasket ($99) and reuse the pan. Does anyone have any experience with the Viton gasket? Thanks, Last edited by Glene; 12-19-2018 at 08:04 AM.. |

I think the point of warming up the fluid is to open a thermostat and cycle fluid to the cooler and back.

I just did this on my 135i. In ~50F ambient in a garage it took about 10 minutes to get to 93F and it pretty much stabilized. You have an extra cooler on your M3 but I think it is plenty of time.

Just did this on my 135i. Also installed the slon pan. Would appreciate if anyone can confirm the cyclic suction-like sound I am hearing is normal in Park (I didn't listen for "normal" before I changed the pan, oil, and both filters so I can't tell you if it was making this sound before). Test drive was fine but not knowing if the sound is normal now bothers me (even though you can't hear it in the car and have to put your head under the car to notice it). Any help appreciated!
BTW, anyone doing this - get 7L of FFL4...
