Correct. Mind turned to Jello and no pics at the time. Was trying not to freeze to death waiting an hour for the tow. My 13 year old son who was with me at the time is going to have a distorted view of the towing profession. 2012 with just over 120k miles. I've had the car since 20k miles. It has been nearly flawless and hasn't seen a shop since the fuel tank breather was replaced under the original warranty around 40k miles. Original bearings, original TAs.

Kept it home, warm and toasty in the garage. My wife's daily (LX570) is in the shop for a rim leak so she needed to drive my daily (Nissan Leaf...long story). I work from home so normally not a big deal but I needed to take my 5YO son to school today. Last night and this morning it is snowing a bunch so I was dreading getting my M3 out. Lo and behold, my son woke up a little snotty and sneezy so I'm keeping him home in the name of public health and definitely not at all bc it allows me to leave my M snuggled in.

Given his 13 year old mind was probably not entirely turned to Jello, due to him not being the car owner, this episode could very well have become crystalized in his memory. Since at 13 years old the mind tends to run wild. In the absence of real photos here's a couple of surrogates.

I see no problem with swapping the plenum outdoors. It really only takes about 15 mins max to remove/reinstall the plenum with a good set of extensions and a 6mm socket.

i think it took me about 45 minutes the first time to remove and reinstall (not counting the time in between to replace throttle actuators)
it was a struggle to get the fasteners back on properly in the back and to seat the plenum correctly

i've taken off the plenum 3 times now
have gotten better and faster but nowhere near 15 minutes

True, I suppose I didn't include removing the air box and intake elbow which can be an additional 10 mins or so. For me, getting the clamps all undone with wobble extensions and a Milwaukee impact ratchet takes about 10 mins. Then about 3 mins to remove the 3 hoses/connectors. The rear hose is a minor pain in the ass. Then less than a minute to pull up the plenum. Lifting it left to right until it's fully out of the clamps.

My plenum comes off and snaps into the clamps quite easily and isn't losing vacuum from what I can tell.

Finished removing and cleaning my wheels, finished installing a new front windshield rubber seal. Next project is the classic leaking windshield washer reservoir!

For the rear hose you gotta just put a small flat screwdriver in there and use that to loosen the clip holding that hose on. Trying to squeeze the clamp to remove it never worked for me.

Small hands help. I also do that last because there's more wiggle room with the plenum detached from the TAs.

Replaced starter (almost stranded me), replaced fuel breather valve (preventative) all in preparation for the ESS G1 kit install today. The starter was a a nitpicky PITA job but it is done and the car runs.

On the plus side, the starter is clean, I did not need a hoist and as my buddy said "you are good at taking the plenum off cause of the TA issues…". Cheeky bugger.

Also to be done today is an oil change, idler pulley replacement and new spark plugs.

Upgraded my gauges today with gray OEM+ looking ones from Venoxy. I still have to adjust my needles as you can see in the last picture, but the whole process was very easy and the results are fantastic. Definitely the way that it should have come from the factory!

What's the mileage on the starter? I'm at 143k kms and wondering if I should replace mine as preventive maintenance. Car still starts strong tho.
