Gotta love a lil’ forum support.

This build just started and I’m ready for it to be over already. Catching mistakes by the contractors before they are irreversible. This project cost us $150k, so there’s a lot going into it.

Here are renders of the full build.

That’s the goal. It’s tough living in Nevada without a pool.

So, the dig wasn’t supposed to begin until Monday (…after we signed off on the proposed outline). I checked the cameras I set up to monitor construction a few minutes ago - because I work in law enforcement in California, but live in Nevada; my lady works for an airline and is gone as well - only to discover they are full throttle into the dig. I’m friggin’ annoyed and confused by the lack of communication. This is frustrating because this project started off with communication issue after communication issue and I’m about to lose my shit.

That stuff drives me up the wall. On one hand, I'd think "well at least they aren't late", but to get going days before planned start date?

Indeed! There were some conflicting measurements we needed to address with the builder, but they dug the yard before we could even address it. I’m dreading their arrival in a couple of hours because the noise kills sleep (…not that I’m sleeping right now because, you know, middle of the night bathroom runs ).

Update:

The jacuzzi is dug and the steps are marked.

These dudes are moving fast. At this rate we’ll be at rebar by Monday/Tuesday. We did hit a little celiche, but thankfully they only needed to hammer for a total of 90 minutes (…so far) because much of it was breaking up pretty easily using the Caterpillar 301.8’s claw scraper.

Rebar complete. The contractors are just tidying up the electrical and then we’ll be on to gunite. Not bad for less than 3 weeks of construction time.

New hardwood flooring just delivered. The room that it's placed in is 30 year old oak.. It's never been refinished. So re-finish for this room. The new floor is going in my family room. Family room has a glued down Bruce Flooring that is past it's prime.

No I'm not. The existing oak flooring that's being refinished I installed my self when I built the house. But 33 years later, between being a bit more financially secure, and a lot less ambitious with these types of home projects... the pros are doing it this go around..

Ah ok! I don’t blame you. Some things are just left for the pros.

And as its not finished, I'd need to rent a nailer and floor sander. Then the mess of the sealer ( although it is water based)... yes, let the pros do it.

Hey All! So I decided to tackle a fun little project and was able to convince the wife it was a good idea. lol.

Previous owners planted bamboo before we moved in and it was very mature growth. For the past 10 years that we have been here, we have been "maintaining" the bamboo. I have sliced my wrist with a machete and my ankle trying to deal with removing and maintaining it so it doesn't spread into the yard. It is a bitch to deal with because it grows so fast and so tall. The bamboo doesn't break down and gets harder over time. So it's not ideal for anything other than privacy. I even thought about renting a Panda to help clear it. lol. jk.

So, the project is to clear ALL of the bamboo and ALL trees, wood and honeysuckle from the area and get to the point where I can get a stump grinder in, then till the yard and level the yard to be able to lay down grass seed or sod in the spring time.

We had two different schmucks come out and try to remove the bamboo. First guy, he came out and tried to cut it down with a saw and said it was too much to do for him. I said of course it would be because you arent using the right tools to cut it down. So we made a deal that if I cut the bamboo down, he will haul it off. So my wife and I cut two large piles of bamboo for him to haul and he only did one...said it was too much work. I even had him come out and take a look before we agreed on a price. I paid him and told him no thanks and we will handle it from now on.

2nd guy, same thing. Wife and I cut more down and had him come out and take a look at the piles and he said, no problem and will be able to get it taken care of. 3 hrs later, knocks on my front door and says, it was too much and couldnt take it all. I told him I am not paying him the full amount that we agreed to since you only did half the work.

Wife and I spent one weekend (two weekends ago) and we were able to get everything knocked out. Burned a lot of the wood / branches and she broke down the remaining small pile of bamboo and were able to tape it in bundles for the trash.

We had 4 trees that needed to be cut down. My father in law helped me cut down two and we had a guy come out this past Friday to cut down the last two as those were the tallest.

We made a deal with the guy if he could leave his dump trailer and he cuts up all of the wood, we will haul it to the dump trailer and he hauls the trailer away. So that is what happened. He was out Friday, left his dump trailer. Family came over Saturday morning for 2.5hrs and we got that thing packed!

Now, it's time to clean up a little with a metal rake, get a stump grinder and tiller to make loose dirt to shape the new yard.

Lots of work but it doubled our backyard for us to be able to have fun back there!

Sheesh. While I don't know anything of bamboo, I know quite a bit of tree removal and brush clearing here at my place. That is a LOT of work. Kudos...

Thanks! It really has been a lot of work. Has taken me about 2 months to get to this point...on and off but really put the hours in over the last 2-3 weekends.

Now the fun part starts. Tree stump removal and tilling. I want to make sure the bamboo doesn't come back and will spray some chemicals onto the bamboo shoots and roots to try and kill it as best I can. Which is why I am waiting until spring time to plant grass so I am not fighting bamboo growing while I am still trying to grow new grass.

I want to put a 20x20x20 shed for a golf sim but the wife wants to install a pool. I don't want anymore work around the house! Pools are way too much work.
