Clearance is very tight in front for even low profile ramps. Works better to back up like in my post #15, but then, of course, you have to jack the front up. Not having the car level, as you suggest, will result in some amount of oil left in the two sumps, but it may not be much.

Thanks to the OP for this wonderful thread!
I got my oil replaced yesterday and the M drives so much smoother. I got an awesome deal at the dealer 135 for 9 quarts and the filter. |

Oil change deal
That is a good price - like $15 for labor.

Those using MityVacs or other extractors to remove oil rather than drain it from below...do the extractors remove nearly all of the oil? I just want to make sure you can maneuver the hose to the bottom most part of the pan in order to grab more of the particles (if any) and evacuate most of the oil.
Thanks, db Last edited by dbacon; 02-27-2011 at 04:08 PM.. |

I was imagining going through the same opening where the oil gets poured in. Based on your response...I'm guessing that wouldn't work. Time to invest in ramps, a jack and jack stands instead.

No way to suck it on this car, but you don't want to do that anyway man. You want to drain the oil from the bottom WARM, so the bottom of the pan doesn't start developing sludge, which is exactly what would happen if you were to suck it from above over time.

Copper seals available separately from filter kit
Just a heads up that you can buy the copper seal washers as a separate item, rather than as part of the filter kit. 55 cents.
I bought some spare drain plugs today (my originals look like they were over torqued one time and the hex hole is losing its shape/integrity, so I bought spares just in case) |

^^ post count bump?
Anyway, I am sitting at 4903 miles right now and planning on doing an oil change soon. I want to do it myself, but I don't have access to a garage or anything I also don't have ramps either! I'm stuck right now Might drive it home (I'm stationed in VA so I live in an apartment) and my dad and me will give it a shot. Seems pretty easy to do here. Thanks for the great writeup and thread! I just can't justify paying the stealership so much for a mid point oil change, but I also don't want to wait another 10000 miles, something just doesn't seem right about that. I've always done it 3000-5000 miles on my other cars and have had great luck with great running engines.

180 is a darn good price at a dealer considering the parts alone are $140. 40bucks for labor, it might be worth it. Although I would feel better that it was done correctly doing itmyself. I always wonder if the dealer drains all the oil, or even does an oil change at all since we have no dipstick to check the color of the oil and I have no way of watching the work they do. I've caught dealers in the past cutting corners.

Good Day all, we have little sunshine in the Portland, Or! Anyway, I am planning to change my oil today. Although I have changed oil in numerous vehicles (have a wife and kids with cars), I still felt the need to read this carefully. I really appreciate the time you guys put in to contribute.
Anyway, a few weeks ago I came across this oil drain plug from Turner Motorsport while searching online for the TSW. I didn't purchase it, no reason but I will inquire if it fits the M3. "Turn your oil drain plug into an effective metal particle filter! This drain plug fits virtually all BMWs, and has a SUPER strong magnet built into it's tip, trapping iron and steel contaminants and safely removing them from the circulation. This is a must for ALL BMWs, and simply installs in place of your existing drain plug. With every oil change you perform on your BMW, you'll be able to inspect for metal shavings and debris. Many times, if something is going wrong on your BMW's engine, the drain plug can give you an early warning." http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-17...most-bmws.aspx |

Hmmm, the new oil filter is much smaller than the one the dealer used. Perhaps the size might vary a bit, but my suspicion is that I have the wrong filter. The new one is a Mann HU 816. Checking on this now.

A local shop looked up the MANN replacement and came up with part# HU 9265Z, instead of the HU 816 I received so I do have the wrong filter. I am hosed for the day unless someone in the Portland vicinity has one on hand that I can buy.
elp_jc I got excited to as I was searching for the correct oil filter. ECS advertised a Magnetic Drain plug for all e9xs however, they don't explicitly mention the M3. So :-( Here's the link in case I am wrong... careful, no mention of M3. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...+oil+filter%22 |

Darnnit, I won't be so anal.
Although I hate to do this, but I'll put the old oil filter in and pick one up tomorrow and replace it. It won't do the car any harm if in for a days drive to work. I have a service change coming up in about 5k miles as well. This isn't that bad is it? |
