Got in my first ever trip to Road Atlanta over the weekend. Great event with MVP Tracktime. Compared to PCA and BMW CCA, MVP really packs a lot of track time into a day.
My best lap time was 1:38.65. I'm anxious to go back to try to improve on that, but given this was a long haul from near Philly, I don't know when that will be. I didn't notice until today that jakob66 had recently posted a Road Atlanta video. I wish I had seen that earlier as there is always something for me to learn from his videos. My basic track mods: Essex AP Brakes with Ferado DS1.11 pads; Ohlins R&T; Recaro Profi; Test Pipes w/Bimmerworld race exhaust; 275/35 Hankook z214 C51 |

Track/Course: Road America Best Lap Time: 2:33.12 Brakes: Stoptech Trophy St60/St40 (Pagid RS29) Tires (Size & Model): 275/35/18 Pirreli DH take-off slicks (on their last day but still working fairly well) Suspension: 2-way KW Clubsports Other Mods: Test pipes, pulley I've been avoiding updating this thread for a while but I've come to terms with it. Ran at Road America in the fall with the local BMW CCA (advanced group). Car was running well all day and I was FLYING, beat my previous best considerably and was passing lots of race prepped e46 Ms, GT3s, a race prepped e92 M, etc. Obviously I was pushing the car way too hard. Good news: In my last session that I remembered to turn Harry's on I did a 2:33.12! I actually believe that I was running a little bit faster yet in my next session just based on how crazy I was driving it, but I forgot to turn on HLT so I won't know for sure. In any case 2:33.12 seems pretty good because I looked up qualifying times for the 2016 SCCA Majors June sprints T2 class (where our e9x M3s are classed) and it looks like that time is mid-pack (in a street car!). Bad news: When you drive at 10/10ths (sometimes 11/10ths) and leave no room for error bad things can happen. I'll leave it at that since this is a public forum. Be safe out there! For reference it is an E90 M DCT with test pipes, StopTechs, KW clubsports, square apex 18s with (almost dead but still sticking) 275/35/18 take-off Pirelli DH slicks. And one final note: TC Kline was there (was actually running around with him in my last session) and let me say he is unquestionably the nicest and most supportive vendor I have EVER met. I just met the man and had his competitors suspension ( I actually wanted his but found a good deal on used KWs). For a total stranger that didn't have his product he helped me out, gave me a tow, and even was willing to let me borrow a car cover. Talk about service - I know what suspension is going on to my next car! Last edited by WhatsADSM; 12-23-2016 at 10:49 PM.. |

Been a while since I posted on the forums since my car build thread so thought I share a recent lap time in a Time Attack event I attended.
11 E92 M3 DCT Track/Course: Yas Marina - South Circuit Best Lap Time: 1:11:04 Brakes: AP Racing by Essex Front BBK - Ferodo Ds1.11 Front Pads / DS2500 Rear Pads Tires (Size & Model): 275/35/18 Nitto NT01 Suspension: 2-way KW Clubsports Other Mods: Full Exhaust, ESS Tune, BPM DCT Tune, Pulleys [u2b][/u2b] Surprisingly, I was able to put down a faster lap (0.5 seconds faster) with Hankook TD tires and camber plates -stock suspension- (no video so thought I'd post this instead). When analyzing both laps, I was able to do turn 2/3 faster on Hankooks and the last turn as well, resulting in a faster straight line speed. All comments/feedback appreciated. Well from my research more often then not stock suspension, especially zcp with the active sport edc coupled with camber plates is faster than tge majority of expletive with coilovers.I believe the coilovers are technically a good product, 2 factors prevent them from performing better than oem.
1. Vast majority of people probably don't have the ability to really tune their coilovers 2. Coilovers setups are only perfect for one type of corner vs edc adjusts every millisecond to give perfect compression and rebound absorption based on many variables which are present on any given track. I've been rather happy with vorshlag camber plates and re71r tires and put down as good or better times than other e92s with full suspension and Hoosier or nt01 tires. |

Stock edc is not as capable as proper Coilover system. What you said about tuning the suspension is important but out the box it should be better than edc... Like with everything, driver mod is most important mod over everything. Same reason why you get passed up occasionally in civics , miatas etc.

Thanks for your input, I think what I was trying to refer to in my post is how good the m3 suspension is in stock form, with good tires and enough camber in front, I was able to get very good lap times. When I overlay both laps together (I use Harry Lap Timer) I was faster on most of the turns (especially that double right hander) with KW than stock suspension, its just the NT01 (and probably my driving skills) could not get me to do a better lap time. Cheers! |

edc helps with keeping the roll to a minimum through sweepers and some transitions if the track surface is smooth. over imperfections on the track surface, rumble strips, and certain transitions, edc is far from superior to a properly setup coilover. the valving just isn't there and edc doesn't help this at all. i've been running ecd on comfort since i found i was reaching the limit with the edc on certain parts of certain tracks. firmer is better, right? wrong. the car was bouncy, and the tires were skipping over track imperfections, causing me to lose traction. this equated to an unsettled car and a slower lap time. the valving is far from perfect in any setting. based on your statement in the second point you made, i don't think you have a good understanding of coilovers, or an understanding of what edc actually does.

Comfort is absolutely helping. Edc remains active in comfort mode and still helps in smooth turns and transitions. The softer valving of comfort mode allows the suspension to work better. I dropped a lot of time at three different courses exploring this. I know it doesn't sound right, but try it and see.
