Good stuff. Had to go hunting on youtube to find it, weirdly was broken for me in the link.

Watkins Glen
Date: 9-24-16(NASA eastern States Championship)
Lap time: 2:00.941(TT3 record)
Car: 2008 BMW M3 DCT
Total vehicle weight with driver: ~3638 lbs IIRC
Wheel horsepower: 371 peak WHP IIRC
Tire size and model: 275/35/18 Hoosier A7
Estimated ambient temperature: ~55*?
Notes: MCS double adjustable remote reservoir, all solid/spherical bushings/bearings, PFC front BBK, gutted rear interior, 1 race seat, I/H/E, tune, pullies, custom roll bar, splitter, front and rear wing

I later on went 2:01.001 with no front wing on 3rd HC tires with a few small mistakes. My goal was a sub 2:00 which I didn't reach, there are a few things I would've done differently to get there, but I do believe I'm capable of it, but being 1500 miles away I doubt I'll be back anytime soon. It was a pleasure meeting and competing with y'all.

Nice driving. I am actually thinking about getting this car as a daily /occasional track. Not much info on M2 forums as far as track capabilities.
Do you find m2 faster than e9x m3 stock vs stock?

Based on the lap times I've seen on this track, the M2 is definitely faster. The fastest time I've seen for a mostly stock E9x is around 2:05. Brett Smrz did a 2:02 but he had 275 NT01s.

^ remember many of the stock e9x M3 laps were done before buttonwillow was repaved and most say it's about 2 seconds faster now. But yes I'd say the M2 is prob faster.

My e92 m before repave I ran 2:01 with camber plates race pads and rs3 tires and 1:59 with the above and Kw CS. So maybe subtract 2 seconds

I only did 1 real hard session in the m2 to see a baseline time before mods ... throwing KW's on today.

Was that a standard 245/265 staggered setup with the rs3's or 275 square?
I'm curious because I'm mostly stock (Camber plates + RE11 staggered tires) and I'm interested to see what that setup is capable of.

My guess is it was in the mid-90's when you did your lap in the the M2 as well. You probably would have run sub-2:00 in decent weather.

Thanks. Looking forward to read your review of modded m2.
Did you consider MCS coilovers?
Not sure if its available for m2 yet, but I have been hearing good things about this system. Lots of club racers use it with success.
Also, will be interesting to see if M2 runs cool as m3/m4 or gets heat soaked with high oil tempr. like e9x m3 in the high ambient tempr.

I used KW Clubsport 3 way on my E92 M3 and loved them. Hear great things about MCS. Have JRZ on my 964

I ran 275 Square RS3 tires on the e92. Liked it. No understeer at all. And can rotate wheels. Temps were prob 80s. Was the second session of the day as the first session the TPMS went off cause when u go to the track u lower your tire pressures right? Well when TPMS goes off the car won't let you disable DSC. it goes off then as u drive it goes back on so fucked my first session up 😡 Figured out I had to reset the TPMS right after.

Amazing job Greg.
After watching Jacob66 and your videos, I cant stop thinking about pulling things out of my m3, huge rear wings, front splitters and solid bushings, bearings

Hi.

(I've watched your big front wing project with fascination here on the forum.)

I'm curious that you're only 0.1 seconds faster with the big front wing versus without it. If you factor in that the second day was 10ºF warmer than Day 1, and the tires were fresher on Day 1, then is it safe to guess that you were just more familiar with the track on Day 2? I always assumed that a big front wing like that would give the car abilities that would net you larger time gains.....

Why did you remove the wing anyway?

hehe that final turn onto the front straight puts you right up against that wall at pretty high speeds! You look confident and comfortable there, but it definitely is eye catching on the video. Laguna Seca and Sonoma Raceway have some walls that are right up against you, but the speeds are much lower than what you're doing in that final turn. (I've never visited Watkins Glen since I'm on the West Coast, although I'd love to give it a try someday! Do I hear road trip??!!)

Dogbone, WGI is full of walls everywhere! It's pretty exciting.

There are outfits that rent out E92Ms in this area for track use. Let me know if you want to fly over sometime and I'll introduce you to them

I would think WGI, being the fastest road course on average by a good margin in the country, would not be the place where drag is your friend

Thanks. That could be fun!

I do dream of someday trying to plan out an adventure around the country where we trailer from track to track and hit a bunch of awesome tracks. We are fortunate in California to have more than 8 tracks within 500 miles of each other, but there are so many cool places to try.

I removed the wing to experiment and collect data, I didn't think I was going to improve upon my time leaving the car as is, so why not try something different? I'm still a little bit dumbfounded by the data and why straight line speeds were very close with very close exit speeds. The front wing is something I had been wanting to experiment with for several years, it didn't work as well as I thought it would, but we learned some interesting things in the process.

I paid for all the track, better use all of it to maximize exit speed .

Interesting. So are you saying that you're pretty much done with the front wing concept then?

Mostly, it probably won't be legal for TT# classes next year as well.

Sorry bad video and sound quality and the OBD gadget didn't work. The removed mirrors made terrible air waves in the cockpit.
