2009 E92 - First Track Day

I finally took my new (to me) M3 (2009 - DCT) on the track at the ProAuto Bondurant event last weekend in AZ (2/28/21). I had my dedicated e46 out and running but had a rear shock seize on me during the first run of the day. After a quick unload of our luggage (I had the wife, son and dog with me coming in from CA for the weekend) she was ready for the second race.

Luckily I had installed the SS brake lines and race brake fluid the day before (I was contemplating doing one run just to see what the e92 felt like stock). Bondurant is a very short technical loop. I have the stock 245/265 Michelin tires with unknown miles on them. The e92 handles very different than my e46 with weight reduction (I run 1.07/1.08 with the e46, 1.14-1.15 in the m3), full roll cage, coil overs, full slick tire set up (hahaha big surprise). I found myself way out of line very early and having a hard time holding speed. When I came off after the first run the tire pressures were in the low 40’s which explains why it felt like I was driving on ice. Overall I loved the added power of the E92, I was very impressed with the brakes (stock pad none-the-less) and I adjusted to the DCT (I have never run a paddle shift car on the track). I now know I need at a min camber castor plates, some type of four point belt system and a 275 or 285 square set up to turn in a decent time. By the way, those of you that are running street tires are way better drivers than me. I felt like I was all over the place. I never got used to the lack of grip. NT01’s or better from now on for me!

Thanks for the Feedback Alex! I think probably leaning towards a 16' or 18' depending on what I can find available. Half the time an SM will be on the trailer and 20' is more than plenty for that car haha The rest of the time the e92 needs to fit, but I may also downsize to something smaller so I feel ike 20' might be too long for SUV/Small truck towing. I hauled horses all over the place years ago and the smaller the rig the less hassle lol

Yes, it's a 7541. I added the tire rack and then customized the crap out of it by adding a battery box, solar panel, onboard air and electric tongue jack.

okusa I'm looking myself at the Cayenne for towing - did you get a base model or spring for a higher trim? I'm debating at getting this to tow an enclosed since the JimGLO trailers are 2600-2700 lbs empty and I think that this is enough, but I need to do some research on tongue weights etc.
Actually, it took me over 6 months to find the spec I wanted: diesel with air suspension and factory towing package. I absolutely love it and when towing barely even notice the load due to the air suspension. Plus, great mileage and tons of torque. I recently added a Racechip and now it's just silly off the line (adds 36hp and 73 lb-ft) with no codes and 25+ on the highway.

I had a X5 diesel for about a year. I was between cars and a friend wanted out of his lease so I took it over. It was nice but not special and nowhere near the Cayenne in any measurable metric.

this got me curious about towing capacity so i just googled it... i'm sure they vary a bit depending on the year but it looks like the Cayenne has much higher towing capacity than the X5 diesel (X5 gas has higher towing than diesel)

The second highest tow rated mid sized suv that I know of behind the cayenne is the grand Cherokee. The x5 is a pretty close third, and everything after that is pretty mediocre.

Been trying to get the M3 up to my shop for a few weeks now and the weather finally cooperated. Lots to do in the next few weeks.

Step One: Weigh the car as is; Rear seat delete, sparco seats, roll bar, lithium battery, trunk carpet removed

Step Two: Remove more interior bits, install CF sunroof delete, swiss cheese some metal roastbeef style, remove rear sun shade, and see what else can come out

Step Three: Install bimmerworld front canards, install brake ducts once the backing plates show up, install new stiffer springs on the KWs, change the oil, get the slicks mounted up

Step Four: Get it all done before a track day in April

Are you running a stock exhaust too? How about brakes?

Building the E92 328csl https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1579797

I've been taking with this guy and he was able to show that a comparatively spec'd 328 was close to 3,000 lbs. he has removed a bunch of weight and added some bits for rigidity. Why are m3's so comparatively heavy?

Beefier components, extra cooling, larger engine, additional chassis stiffening, etc. It all adds up I guess.

Custom exhaust setup with no cats and Active Autowork rear section. Stoptech ST60 front and ST40 rear brakes.

This weight is with my heavier street wheel/tire setup

Very valid point. Mine is a 2013 I bought used off a 2 year lease. At this point it's value has dropped quite a bit and higher mileage should not be a concern as they are nearly bulletproof.

I'd be worried about this if you were towing enclosed. I've got an open trailex and it works great with the x5d (air suspension and wide tires). Does 85mph comfortably and passes the Cayenne's towing GT3's, then the M3 passes the GT3's on track.

The X5 diesel towing capacity is 7,700 pounds with the right hitch. The factory capacity is limited by the oem hitch.

What's the overall GVWR? People often forget that all of the shit you put in the car like tools, spare parts, etc. add up very fast and decreases the towing capacity. Two sets of wheels and tires is hundreds of pounds.

It's easy to just look at the trailer weight + vehicle weight and think you're fine.

It takes weight to handle power also. My rear diff weighs like 90lbs with the aftermarket LSD added while the 335 open diff is like 115lbs, and I don’t even know how heavy the e92m3 diff is but it’s even more with larger gears and a LSD obviously. Stuff like that. Axles heavier, etc etc.

The I6 engine in the 328 is magnesium block and extremely lightweight, like 330lbs it’s even lighter than the flat 4 boxer engine in the FRS.

With the invisahitch/execuhitch on the X5 the the tow rating is 7700 pounds and 6k pounds with the factory hitch installed. Keep in mind that US tow ratings are conservative compared to what the EU rates the same exact vehicle for tow rating. Still, if youre concerned about liability and you live stateside, stick to what the US tow ratings are listed at.

The bottom line: an X5 would/does do a fine job pulling a braked alu trailer weighing 1500 pounds, a 3500 lb car, two extra sets of additional wheels if you roll like that, and your tools and cooler, even if you don't add the invisahitch. If you do, you can try and fill the back of your SUV with even more heavy shit.

Lets remember that outside of of the US, and especially Texas where anything under a half ton truck is considered an unworthy compact, these X5's and the like are what people buy for tow vehicles.

I've lived over there. There are no Titans, F150's or Silverado's and yet tens of thousands of cars get towed all over the continent.

I'm at 900lbs trailer, 3000lb of leaking bavarian junk, 2 sets of extra wheels, 4 full VP gas cans, tools, cooler... it's under 6000lbs. I've tested a fully laden emergency panic stop with a cut brake line on the trailer, no issues. I've tested WOT on long highway inclines at 80mph+, transmission temps didn't even bulge. It's hilariously capable.

Freedom truck makes sense if you are doing enclosed. Eurotruck works great with the right setup though, don't dismiss it.
