+ 1 on having to have it changed out my dealer.

Mine started rattling horribly at idle maybe 6 months 3k miles after install.
75k car buzzing at idle, city street speed is embarassing lol.

New one has been on with no issues now. Seems BMW did change something.

Thanks to this thread, I had my 1st-gen replaced with a 2nd-gen MPE recently and the 2nd-gen MPE also fixes drone issue too.

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...=984018&page=2

The part number of the 1st and 2nd gen MPE's are identical. (EDIT: this info was told to me from the dealer's parts people. Since then, other m3post forum members have stated that the gen2 MPE has either an updated p/n or has "-02" appended to the p/n.)

I think the 2nd gen has a "-02" at the end of the part number on the label attached to the exhaust, but a lot of good that does when you're trying to find one within the BMW parts system. Clearly it was 100% a financial decision by BMW *not* to supersede the old part number with a new one since they want to continue to sell the old part within their system to unknowing future owners...hoping the cracks won't show up while their warranty is still in effect. Typical.

After doing some research on the topic in regards to part numbers on the 2nd Generation MPE, it seems as if the new updated part numbers for the E92's end with 201-03 or -04 (2 is X'd out) whereas the E90's end with 198-04 (1 is X'd out) as seen here courtesy of carrot297 and buddalun

E92/E93 M Performance Exhaust plate

E90 M Performance Exhaust plate

The "MHG S 201" or "MHG S 198" numbers appear to be production numbers for the exhaust. This indicates that approximately 1,525+ M Performance Exhausts were produced for the E92/E93's and approximately 200 M Performance Exhausts produced for the E90's. The plate for my E90 M Performance exhaust is numbered 181, just 8 away from buddalun's. Numbers are just estimated based on the pics of the plates we've seen recently posted.

Inconel 625 is what you would use to repair it.

Thanks! I haven't had any issues with mine with 2 years of use, but this is good to know just in case something happens.

I updated my post #137 above to reflect more details on the 2nd generation M Performance exhaust for the E9X M3's.

Has anyone reported cracks with the updated MPE with the new holes?

I wonder if we can just have holes created on the old version at an exhaust shop to alleviate the stress.

I don't think just adding holes to the muffler will solve the issue. It appears that there is actually a large support within the muffler itself that runs straight through one side to the other. There is a thicker covering surrounding the support and is visible when looking through the muffler piping. It appears that it may also serve to separate the exhaust gasses so they flow out the tail pipes more uniformly.

I took a pic of it with my phone, but it was horrendously out of focus. I'll try to add the pic up at a later time and edit this post when I get the chance. You should get an idea of what I'm trying to describe.

That's reassuring. Looks like you are running test pipes as well. I'll be running the stock mid-pipes and cats. Just picked up a 2nd hand 1st generation MPE as well.

Well, I just joined the cracked MPE club. Installed mine in April of 2011. Mileage on the muffler is now 70,000 miles. Just two hairline cracks in the middle of the valley on both sides. Doesn't look like it's leaking but just a tiny bit there. I have a 3 day track event in March, guess I'll see if they open up any more.

So what do we do if we are out of warranty? I have a 2011 with 28k miles on mine and after reading tis thread I might have this problem I could see what seem to be a little escape of gasses/ soot from where many have described. Im going to wait until my cars is on the lift and I can get a better look because it could just be dirty.... Lets hope
