This has been bothering ma all day as the deceased was just a bit younger than my children. I suppose a single 29 year old with a good job can afford a $75k car, but suspect he had some help from his parents on this. That gets me to the heart of the matter. I can't imagine how his parents must feel about their loss.

Moralizing about drunken driving or distracted driving is inappropriate here.

had to be going over 100, 90 in my car feels like 60

I've looked at the photos a hundred times or more and believe this is over 100mph. Which brings up the composite roof material and lighter materials used in the doors and body of our cars. Composites shatter and do not absorb any energy. What was left of the plastic fender melted. I cant see anything matching what should be a drivers door. it does not look like the seats stayed with the frame either. Maybe they were removed before these photos were taken? Where is the massive drive shaft?
Usually an end result like this is due to a train running through a car. How fast was this guy going?

Its a very sad day for everyone. If this incident would prevent another accident by opening our eyes to the dangers of speeding,it would bring peace to his soul.
Our greatest consolation to the family would be a change in our attitude.I don't drink and never plan to .But I speed for silly reasons.I feel i can safely speed because I drive a bimmer.I guess there are speed limits posted for a reason.Regardless of our degree of sobriety... I guess there is nothing like speeding safely.

Maybe they need to put some better signage in. Even if he was going too fast, I'd say it's better to have extra warning signs for those who speed than tragic accidents like this.
The road is marked at 45mph and there appears to be a traffic light in the middle of the long corner. I've never been there, but from what I can see, it doesn't need extra signs. Plus when you compare the radius of the corner to turn 4 at Watkins Glen, I'd say a E92M3 could take that corner at 100 or 110 plus.

Here's turn 4 at the Glen. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...11319&t=h&z=17

My heart goes out to the Portela family. Let us hope the rest of us can learn something from this tragedy.

It is relatively sharp turn and dimly lit, residential area. The only signage is the posted speed limit, I believe? Can't say I notice signs being a local and know the roads like the back of my hand. The road has reflectors all over it, as do most roads here. He was past the apex of the curve when he made the impact with the first tree.

Someone took some pictures of the crash scene and posted them here:

Rip fellow member, my prayers go out to your family and friends. There should be a thread with all other similar incidents on these forums for those members that have lost there life, to remember them and serve as a reminder to us all that need it. Hopefully there aren't many

Not here to pass false info or to be disrespectful, but he just left The Player's Club and it was 3:30AM on a Monday morning. No idea if he was legally drunk or what, but they already said alcohol was a factor. There are videos out there that show what a few beers will do to your reaction speed and motor skills. At high speed your reaction time requirements are even greater.

RIP. That's so sad. That's why we should all be careful in driving and if we should want to drive fast then a track is always near our areas.

very sad news, and a loss for our community. regardless of the persons behavior (safe, wreckless, drunk, or foolish), the loss of life is something i would never wish upon anyone.

let's take this as a opportunity to be aware that our cars are not invincible, and as a reminder in those moments when we're faced with a decision to push harder or back off on public streets, to back off and save the fun for an appropriate venue.

Met him a few days ago, R.I.P.

Met him a few days ago driving to the Wellington Mall, Nice Kid, SUCKS! I'm 40 and I know I'm guilty of driving after drinking a few, maybe a little too fast in the M at times and, this makes me step back and take a look. Life is too short! Whether or not he was drinking, let's all think about this next time you're even questionable about driving, I know I will!

dani: a wonderful friend to so many

for those of you who have expressed your warm condolences, I thank you.

for those of you who have passed negative harsh judgment, i ask you to please save it for another forum.. or express it on a different topic.

For those of you who did not know Dani, he was a wonderful and loving person in so many ways. He was one of my dear friends, and truly special. We rode horses together, and i feel truly blessed to have had him apart of my life. He left this world way to early. Dani was a very smart, an amazing photographer, and a talented athlete...but most of all put a smile on everyone's face. He was not even a big drinker. We all dabble, and sometimes make mistakes but this is not the time to pass judgment. We still do not entirely know all the details of his passing. please let his friends, and family mourn the loss of a wonderful friend, brother, and son. He had passion for life and everyone around him. Please remember him in a positive light, like he deserves.

we miss, and love u Dani.
