Impressive performance, but the ringer tires helped.

And those ringer tires were worn by the gt3 and viper as well. I'm torn between the gt3 and z06 as my next track car. 1\2 the price is hard to ignore.

exactly. All I can tell you is my perspective as a former Z06 owner of 5+ yrs. It needs to be experienced before being dismissed. You WILL feel like you're in a race car. The power is insane, especially from about 4500rpm-redline(7100) Its unbefuckinlievable! The handling with sticky tires is also unbelievable. With only minimal mods, the Z06 can beat anything on the track.

Slightly modified Z06 is as fast as the GT3 Cup (997)
It is a very very fast car. Add some aero mods (besides changing the seats and rear susp.) and it will basically kill anyting on a DE event. I think it is actually too fast with mods for a nontrained weekendracer. My only thing with the C6 Z06 is that it is harder to place exatly where you want it and the feedback you get is too late for me. The GT3RS is still not as easy as the M3 or my miata but not as scary as my Z06. In the Z06 I am scared more often than any other car. (on the track) I can do 2 maybe 3 laps with the concentration it needs to push it about 90%. I am just not good enough to exploit it. Franlkly it is more car than I can handle with my limited experience. I am changing my perspective on track days. No longer want to be the fastest -being there done that - on a DE event but rather enjoy it in a relaxed way. Like enjoy the rain and low traction conditions. Overall I highly recommend the Z06 for track use, take your time with it and learn it in a safe way maybe start with no mods except the seats (New seats are a must, the OEm ones will not hold you at all!!) |

Nicely done. And filling up at Shell, too. Jealous, though, that you're able to get VPower so cheaply. We're paying around $4.65 a gallon here.

Do it! Before I got the Z, I had a 2006 Z51 coupe with the LS2. It was my first vette. I loved it until the following year I got the Z06. Now, you would expect a difference between the 2 but I wasnt expecting such a dramatic difference as it was. The Z06 feels more secure, more buttoned down. Cohesive. It handles way better. Obviuosly, its MUCH, MUCH faster. Not even funny how much faster it is. Looks way better. Do yourself a favor and atleast drive one, I'm warning you though, you're gonna want to buy it afterwards.

I have owned both the Z06 and now my M3 and can tell you that the Z06 is superior in all performance aspects, and rightfully so since it is designed to compete against "Supercars". I do enjoy the M3 because it is very good at everything, as opposed to my old Z06 which was excellent in a few areas and lacking in others.
The bottom line to me, after having my Z06 that had h/c/i and all bolt ons (546rwhp), there is no car on this planet that comes close to the bang for your buck in the performance world. Buy a lightly used one for about $50k and with $20k in mods, it will outrun and outhandle 99% of street or track cars.

Stock for stock, Z06 kills and M3 in every performance category.
But just for comparison purposes, here's what happens when you put a modded M3 vs a modded Z06 in a straight line. M3 has an ESS VT2, MRF mid-pipe and Akra slip. 567 wheel uncorrected. Otherwise 100% stock. Z06 has built motor (heads, cam, FBO) 585 wheel. Lightened to 3,200 lbs with driver. 345 rear tires. Run is from approx 40 to 160 mph

I have no problem with the Z06. I was looking at them when I was getting my GTR. Just never got a chance to test drive one. I'd get one in a heartbeat. and will be looking at the C7 when it comes out. I'm just calling a spade a spade, and not looking to get into a huge debate about it.
But Motortrend did call them out on it: "So why sixth place? You know anything about tires? Chevrolet decided to offer slicks as an option for the 2012 model year, and our Corvette came so equipped. In the Corvette's defense, the Porsche GT3 RS also came packing basically the same sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cups. However, they're different spec, and the autobahnstuermer's tires had tread all the way around. Not the 'Vette's meats. A quarter of the enormously wide 345s had no tread at all. The refrain then became, "Sure, the 'Vette's fast. But put those tires on the LFA, and let's see what's what." |

That makes no difference to me. They are an option from GM. Porsche has been offering similar tires for the GT3 for years. I'm not looking to debate about it either.

I would be interested in hearing other perspectives on what it would take on an M3 to equal the the record track time from the stock Z and other supercars.
I would venture to say that it would take $25K in (the correct) mods without weight reduction to do it as follows: Intercooled ESS blower kit + no cat exhaust + 100 octane Sleeved coil-overs with square set-up/275's all around (like the MRF shop car) Sport Cups Camber plates and a perfect alignment (1.8 neg) M3 GTS bushings 6 or 8 piston front and 4 piston rear brakes I have a lot of respect for the Z, and it's untouchable bang-for-the-buck. But not everyone is into Vette's. The weight disadvantage of the M3 is its achilles-heel, but it's platform is solid and so by upgrading every major aspect of the car (engine, suspension, braking), it may be able to equal the track performance of the supercars.
