Back to Road Atlanta!
It's been my first time at RA since 2018 and 1st time in car after long winter break. I did that lap in my 2nd session (after rain earlier).
BMW E92 M3 JPM MCS 3-ways with 850/1300 springs Stoptech ST60 front, rear stock. Cobalt XR1/XR2 pads. Fully closed undertray / diffuser. Full cage, gutted. Min weight with driver 3501 lbs max 358hp at rear axle Hoosier A7 315/30/18 all around. Over the winter I changed from 295 to 315 in the front and it made a huge difference. I now have to learn to use the added mechanical grip... For more details see "Jakob66 E92 M3 Time Trial Build" Enjoy

Not an E92 but E46 M3 at Road Atlanta. This is only my second time at track, but I did have pro racer Scott Heckert coach me Friday and Saturday. I was able to run 3 sessions on Friday. This video is from the warm up session on Saturday. Since I had not run with NASA SE before, they gridded me towards the back of the pack. Took a bit of work to get a clean lap (1:33.19). Jens (aka Jakob66) shows up in the video when he passes me.
I know there is still some time to be had. I skipped all of the official sessions Saturday due to weather. The last session turned out to be dry enough to turn some decent laps. I was only able to get one dry session Sunday. That lap (1:33.6) was good enough for P1 in TT3 and 2nd overall. Unfortunately, my camera did not save that. Still trying to figure out why my MXm and AIM are not playing together. I plan on changing the power to the MXm as I think that's why it's not saving videos from time to time. |

As always nice driving Denis! Would be great to share the track with you for an hour we'd find time all over the place ..

Finally found time this week to edit and post my video from this past Saturday at Eagles Canyon.
They separated out run groups and people at the track so that all green/blue students drove in the morning in alternating lead-follow instructed 30min sessions and went home around lunchtime. Then all of us yellow (solo) drivers and instructors had open track time from 1-5pm. Made for a pretty fun day with literal miles of wide open track, and a new PB! Looking at data from friends there's at least a second I'm giving up in T4-7 but man that downhill braking zone and right-hand sweeper still psyches me out!

It's fascinating watching this and seeing the differences in our cars' braking. For example, coming into turn 1, I am braking between the 2 and 1 marker and trailing it through that little kink.

Just different choice in style of driving I think. I tried braking later there a couple times but prefer to treat the 1-2 kink with an early turn-in and straighten it out as much as possible to use it to carry more speed into the straight between 2-3. Remember, less torque and uphill there lol

Totally. Very different cars and different approaches. I can tell you that in my car (which has a shitload of tire), we tried a few different approaches there and I was faster with much later braking followed by a long trail through that next turn. I admittedly use that second curb to sorta kick the car and pivot it more quickly. :-) Our approaches to that first toilet bowl entry are pretty different too.

1:59.7 VIR Sept 12th 2020 / won both days TT3 at VIR
With 315/30 all around my car finally doesn't push anymore!
I added additional oil cooler and front diffusers and together with the wider tires made a big improvement. I still made plenty of mistakes but I made it up in the uphill esses...

One very fast E46 M3 !!
Two completely different cars. My E92 M3 full race trim, way more Hp and DCT and Denis E46 M3 full race trim, stick shift and 500lbs less weight due to 10:1 rule (and additional weight benefits caused by DCT vs. stick shift and tire rule).
I could not pass that car on the straight! The E46 M3 paired with a great Driver like Denis is a serious competition for my high tech racer!!

Your oil temperatures are a dream!!! How crazy is it to put in an additional oil cooler? I assume it's for real race cars only

I've been meaning to post this video from 2 weekends ago, it's a new PB at Pacific Raceways.
I've been intentionally running the car without any aero this season to work on my fundamentals, and it's paid off greatly. Car is on JRZ suspension, running R888r tires. There is definitely room for improvement. I'm confident I can run a 1:31, but a 1:30 would be very tricky. Winter weather will determine if I can hit these goals before I close out the season *knocks on wood* we'll see. Anyways, jump to 3:35 in the video for the hotlap (skip being stuck in traffic and warming up tires). Enjoy!

Went back to ECR with NASA. We ran there the first time in August and I managed a win on Saturday but lost to Mark Butterfield on Sunday. He officially set the track record with a 2:03.064 but had a 2:02 that was DQ'd. So we both knew there was more time to be had.
This weekend, the weather conditions were perfect. Sun kept the track hot but the cool temperatures helped make some extra HP. My goal for the weekend was to get a 2:01 or better. I signed up for Friday T&T to get some additional practice. By the 3rd session, I had a run a 2:01.7 and was feeling pretty good. My good friend Kevin Fennell was there in his Lotus. He had never run the track and had to skip the 2nd session to get a shock rebuilt but made it back for the 3rd session. He ran a 1:57 in his car which runs in TT2. Class wise my car should be about 2 seconds slower than him so I knew I was leaving time on the table. We looked at my video and data as well as his. My car was actually out accelerating him but he was destroying me in the corners. I went out in the 4th session to see if I could apply what he was telling me. I was able to pick up a second for a 2:00.8 (about 8:40 mark in video below). I was feeling pretty good about the next day as I was planning to put on stickers. I skipped the first session as my car was basically frosted all over. As a result I was gridded 9th or 10th for the first timed session. I fought my way through traffic and got a 2:01.2. I wasn't trying to drive real hard as I still had my scrubs and just wanted to get a decent grid position for my sticker sessions. Stickers go on and I grid P3 for the 2nd timed session. Unfortunately, the tires never seemed to come in and I was sliding all over. I managed a 2:01.7 but was definitely disappointed. Final timed session was even worse with a 2:02. I skipped Sunday due to weather and a 9 hour drive home. Good luck I left early because my starter gave up the ghost when I got home and tried to unload from the trailer. On a positive note, I won Saturday and reset the track record with the 2:01.2 from the session with my scrubs that had sat out in 30 degree weather all night. In any event, here are my fastest laps of the weekend. Will have to wait until next April to try for my 1:5x. |
