Disconnected alternator positive cable due to bad regulator.
Found the exhaust manifold heat shield above alternator loosen, held only by one bolt (of three). Put the new bolts on, heat shield secured. Went for a drive without battery charging. No problems. Now waiting for the new regulator to arrive. |

Back down the Rabbit Hole for me.
Wrapped up all the under hood maintenance on Friday, went for a short test drive, came home and topped off the coolant and checked the other fluids. Next morning take it out for a real test, that went fine, but on the way home I get the rear brake lining too thin warning. Back into the air we go.

Get a cover for that filter. It gets dirty real quick where its located. That way you are not scratching the back of you hand so often when replacing/cleaning. Also look into geting a 2115 MM belt vs the 2120 belt that comes with the kit. Mine slipped alot.

If you disconnect the charging cable you need to disconnect the little feedback wire as well to prevent it from generating maximum possible voltage. I think this car has the ECU controlling excitation voltage and it may have a fail-safe mode, but I know on a conventional alternator with on-board voltage regulator, leaving the feedback wire connected without the large charging wire will kill the alternator.

Went on a sunrise rip through the fields, ripped past a hidden CHP officer so I quickly turned off and snapped a picture while my wanted heat level went down.

I just returned from a ten-day 1500-hundred mile round trip, Richmond, VA - Jacksonville, FL, I-95 all the way. Trip notes:
1. On the way down, my one-quart-down oil light came on. I added a quart of OEM Castrol to the resident Liqui-moly. Not sure if that's bad or indifferent for my engine. Still under 3K since the last oil change. (My current indy shop twice refused to top off the oil at the last service. Drove out with the e-dipstick at half full. Maybe I need a new indy). 2. I passed 77K miles. That's 51K in just under four years of ownership, with overall average of 7.7K miles per year of life (build date 10/10). 3. Trip MPG: 20.4. 3. While I cruised in the center or right lanes at normal highway speeds -- 75-80 mph -- many cars would approach quickly on the left, pause behind my rear quarter panel, accelerate, pause again in front of my front fender, then shoot off. What to make of that? 4. At literally every gas stop, two per leg, a Black guy (just citing the truth here) would give me a compliment or and/or ask about the car. I'm as White as they come. It was always a pleasant moment in the annals of race relations. 5. In contrast to my former e36 and e46 M3s, the e92 is a comfortable long-distance cruiser, as well as all-around daily driver. BMW achieved a miracle with our beautiful cars.

2- Average annual miles just under 13k...not too bad. Although I think this "covid year" will throw things off for years to come. 3- People trying to goad you into a race. ![]() 4- This addiction that we have doesn't discriminate lol. At my local Cars & Coffee, I see people of all background park next to each other and chat. Trucks/mustangs w/ the confederate flag all over parked right next to black folks talking about cars, mods etc. When you have that 1 thing in common, you realize we're not so different after all. 5- The M3 is supposed to be the everyday (truly every day) sports car. More so than my old e46 M3, the e9x M3 nailed it. You can take the kids to school, take the wife out for a nice evening (provided your not catless lol) and still hit the track in this car. It feels like a 2-generation leap over the e46. Personally, I believe this is the best all-around performer out there, given current values.

"Track day" at Watkins Glen! Ok, so it was glorified parade laps with my college alumni association, but still a great time. Used it as an excuse to checkout some local breweries in the Finger Lakes area.

These would go where your Crankcase Pressure Regulator Valve currently sits. This will allow you to use catch cans instead of having contamination and oil going back though your intake. There is another plate per valve but yet to print that yet.
