Diamonds have got to be the most overpriced, useless items in the world. They're a big waste of money if you ask me.

You should spend 3k max and use the other 9k for a house payment. 9 thousand dollars man, that will increase the value of the home you can afford, which in turn will appreciate more, which in turn allows you to upgrade to a better home, which in turn will allow you to provide more for your kids, which in turn makes everyone better overall.

Everybody is comparing the investment of a car vs. a diamond ring, how about an investment of a car vs. a wife. It's like having or hiring:
  • cook
  • maid
  • wife (sex)
  • anything you can think of...

All for free!!!

Also now isn't exaclty the time to be purchasing Real Estate, unless you can get a sweet deal on a foreclosure.

You absolutely CANNOT be married if you think that is how it works! Especially on the sex part, and you are WAY OFF on the "All for free!!!" comment. Hell, the ring is just the tip of the expenses iceberg in terms of having a wife and marriage.

You know the old saying as to why a bride has a tremendous smile on her face as she walks down the aisle? She is smiling for she knows she has given her last blowjob!

One would have never guessed it'd happen in the mighty country of California. Look at those people who did a 2/28 in San Diego with minimum down, they owe more than their properties are worth, with monthly payments going up. Can you imagine such a predicament? And we're talking purchases made 2k5 and up, that's nearly the last two years. I thought those kind of horror stories only happened in Texas, Ohio, and Syracuse.....

It's true, no matter what a great deal you got...let's say you even got GIA papers and bluenile.com pricing with no sales tax. You go to sell that stone back to a jeweler, what do you get?? Not much relative to what you paid. And it's a very secretive little society that deals them, and I think the only transaction I've ever made where I dealt with a cartel.

BMW is the same way--whether we paid list, or got $2,000 off, in a sense we got ripped-off. But there are others who want the same and turn a coupe into a 2 mo. + wait--that's demand for you....

Marriage is the 2nd most expensive thing you will ever encounter, next to divorce.

Six pages -- this probably already has been mentioned.

How many of you guys have gotten married recently? $12K for an engagement ring really is pretty typical, and not for a crazy huge rock or anything, but just a decent ring.

Interesting you say this, I invested in gold back when it was $250/oz. The dividends it payed out easily payed for the ring, the wedding, with a nice chunk of change left over in my pool account

to the OP, don't sweat it...If she's the one you KNOW you want to spend of your life with, it will be all worth it to simply see the smile on her face. I say go for it!

Jesus, can't you take a joke?!?

And yes, I am married. Please don't ask what happened to the maid, the cook, and whatever else you are planning to ask...

9k on a $120K house is a decent chunk
9k on a $850K house is almost not noticable
