I had the same ticking sound a few months ago but not as frequent as yours does in the video. However, I switched to Shell gas 2 months ago and it went away :. I also run Liquimoly 10w60, normal freeway cruising speed the "oil" temp gauge stays in the middle, but on aggressive driving its slightly higher (the white mark is visible vs. the needle covering it)

Your ticking noise sounds exactly the same as M3 RAGE here in his video => http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1130559
Cause was the heat shield , but yours sounds a lot louder .
I saw also your comment in his thread , and I really hope yours is also only the heat shield .

Yeah I am having my doubts about that, but it does make sense my temps are higher from new oil....

I actually noticed the noise after I got my oil changed to liquimolly. I had thoughts of changing back to castrol TWS. lmk if you hear a decrease in noise. Im going to get a check up at an indi shop this saturday. I'll let you know what they find.

Track/HPDE use isn't hard on a street car beyond the brakes and tires/

I know of many cars that see frequent hpde, and many with high street miles in addition and frankly if I was buying a used car I would rather have one of those than a low mile garage queen. Hell my lowly e90 330i has 165,000 mile and plenty track (and autocross use as well) miles with no issue.

Just like when I tell people that I am a runner and the response I get is "oooh thats bad for your knees" ....um, no. It's only bad on knees that have previous damage.

Yes, I just got a change to LiquiMoly also!!! That is one common occurrence between all 3 of us...

There is also a post on here somewhere with another guy, got the ticking after filling up with LM and immediately switched back, zero ticks.

I just turned 50k miles on the car and started to hear the noise a week ago. It was not a constent noise so I was not as concerned with it. I changed the oil this morning based on information I read in this thread and did so with castrol, now the noise has become more consistent than ever! The oil had 5k on it and I live in Texas where the current temperature has been 95* plus all month! I use the same independent shop to change my oil and they do great work. After the oil change, the noise came back instantly. He said he would recommend I take it to BMW but based on the fact that I literally just went out of warranty I was hesitant to do so. I end up taking it straight from the independent shop to BMW where I have them grab the shop foreman to listen to it. As I figured, they want to schedule an appointment and have me drop it off for their tech to listen to the noise. I now have an appointment scheduled on Tuesday for them to try and diagnose the problem. I told him it is out of warranty by 100 miles and 7 months by the term. He said lets not worry about that right now and let us handle that portion as we need to find out what it is causing the noise. I drove to work and it is now worse. I am concerned with driving it now. The crazy thing is, the idle is smooth, there is now power loss, and it starts fine. It just makes this funky clicking noise sporadically. At idle, become more consistent around 1,500 rpm and it is very apparent with the windows down at a slow roll around 5 mph. Any thoughts?

Heat shield? Seriously that sucks but I bet the dealer will take care of you. Keep us informed. Personally I wouldn't drive it but many people have had the problem for thousands of miles.

Since earlier, my dad who has been a tech his entire life came and listened to it and said it is not internal on the engine but I hear it the same exact times you are hearing it.

UPDATE: I dropped my car off at BMW 6 days ago... they called Friday saying they were opening a case with BMW and the noise seems to be coming from the flywheel. Here it is Monday, I still have not heard from him so I am not sure what is going on. The guy seems to be mediocre at best about keeping me updated, but that is a dealer issue.

1000km later and the noise is still there for me.

lots of threads on this topic, but it sounds just like the random / inconsistent ticking all the youtube videos show.

mine is a bit different though, in that i only ever hear it at idle.

to summarize the symptoms for me anyways:

a) only when the motor has fully warmed up. 100c (middle) mark.
b) only at idle. as soon as i apply the slightest bit of throttle (while stopped or in gear), it vanishes.
c) its not always there. often even when the motor is fully warmed up its not there.
d) spirited driving seams to bring it out.
e) it'll come and go in the same drive cycle. what i mean by that is, pull up to stop light, ticking there... green light, 5 minutes later next stop light, no ticking.
f) first popped up as soon as the weather started to hit 20c+ about 2 months ago. i did have an oil change done right before then as well btw.
g) perhaps unrelated... but when i enter underground parking that is 'ribbed' (eg: bricked un-evenly on purpose to help with winter traction), i think i hear the same noise...

im well over 2000k km with the ticking, and it has not gotten worst at all. perhaps a bit better if anything.

car runs great... been doing a bit more spirited driving then usual lately as i have been doing many chores w/o the gf in the passenger seat.

OK!!! I have a resolution! The noise for my car was the flywheel. My local dealer has ordered the part and even though I am out of warranty, BMW has agreed to goodwill all but $750 worth of the repair. If I were to guess, this is the cost of the part and they are paying for the labor. Regardless, they didn't have to do anything and they stepped up to help. All in all, I am pleased with the fact that they are willing to do something and recognized that this is an issue that should not have happened. I should have my baby back by beginning of next week

Could you possibly be a little more specific? I.e. What part are they changing? What went wrong with the original part? etc. Thanks

What I was told is the flywheel was barely hitting the bell housing. They do not know what caused it to get to the point of making the clattering noise but they are replacing the flywheel. I have only used the launch mode 3 times since I have owned the car in a year so I highly doubt that is the culprit. The part came in today so I am thinking, knowing how fast dealers are, that I should have my car back wednesday.

Ok guys.... As promised I, updates..... I get this text earlier after asking how everything is going with the flywheel swap... Prepare yourselves because it was harder for me to read than for you. TRUST ME!!!!

"We got the fly wheel replaced. Noise still present. We are going to remove the new flywheel and continue with the diag. We have a feeling it may need a motor.....still not a for sure thing. Will keep you posted."
