I had my E46 M3 when I was 20, and I never did anything stupid with it. Everyone's different, so there's no real answer to this question.

I got my E46 M3 at the age of 23. Not really much of an aggressive driver. I'm more on the laid back cruizin side. Now I'm 29 and I have an E92 M3 and realized that my driving style hasn't changed one bit.

Relaxed in an M3? Okay.

that's good to hear... I always find myself stomping on the gas to hear the exhaust. I just can't drive this car slow but then again i have never found myself in a situation where i felt the car was too powerful and hard to control. I guess i tip my hat off to BMW for building such a great handling car. There are some cars out there with less power than the M3 which are terrible to drive fast

different for Coupe vs Sedan....
best age to drive M3 is DIFFERENT for Coupe vs Sedan in my view.....4 door is daily driver and a second family car.......nothing else comes close to this practical + sports combo today.....so SEDAN age is 30+ in my view....and COUPE is 20+....

Pretty much haven't read this thread at all, but I see lots of potential for conflict here.
That, and maturity, responsibility, and consideration for other drivers out there. There are people who are 20 in body and 50 in mind, and there are those who are 50 in body and 20 in mind, after all. |

I'm 30 and picked up my first M3 last week. I think it's a good age. M5 is my goal by 35-40.

The only time I felt nervous was when I brought the E92 M3 home for the first time with the though of having a V8 underneath the bonnet. The car feels so stable and makes you feel confident...unless provoked I guess, but rarely do I step on the boundary.

M3 age is 16 to 69. at age 70 you should downgrade to a 335i.

I got my M3 when I was 16 and I definitely realize that I was too young for it at the time. It's too fast and classy for a teenager, and it tempts you to speed/show off (i.e. can become a social crutch-aka "oh the kid with the nice car").
OTOH, the M3 handles very well and is built well, so it's safe in a wreck (at least moreso than old Camaros or Mustangs with equal power). However, I think I was better suited to my STI that I used to commute 60mi to school. I sold my STI when I went off to college, but since I'm graduating next year I'll probably pick up an E90 as a DD & keep my LSB E46 for a toy (9k miles on it). |

We all thought/think we're bullet-proof as teenagers. The combination of high-powered cars and inexperience is a disaster in the making.
As a 46 y.o. driving an M3 that costs US$144,000 here I'm sensible enough to know that I can blow off the young punk revving his crappy V8 next to me at the lights but mature enough to be content with that knowledge. |

This is so dumb.
There is the E90 M3 which can be driven anywhere from 20-70. There are plenty of older people driving 335i's.
