Spare Tire Followup
I ordered the Seasonal Tire Tote from The Tire Rack. It looks sturdy, fits, and covers the spare really well and is supposed to work with the regular tires too (haven't tried yet). Note: the tire tote is sold in pairs, but isn't expensive @ about $20./pair.

Any chance someone with one of these spares could see if it fits on an F10 (current 5 series)?
Tire diameter should be a bit different but size is available, real question is the wheel fitting and clearance? Sorry this is off topic but somehow related. Would really appreciate any help. Thanks |

Hi all. I took my BMW 36-11-6-768-861 black steel wheel and Maxxis T135/70R18 104M M9500N over to my local tire shop, and they were really scratching their heads at first. From the look of the wheel and tire, these folks thought there was no way that skinny tire would mount on the wheel, so I told them to go ahead and try anyway. Of course it mounted right on, filled up with air, and balanced with no issues. Now I have a compact spare in my trunk, along with a jack.

Has anyone in Western Canada done this? I want to get one of these for my car. Wondering if I should source the parts from my dealer and tires from Maxxis or if there is different sources for us. Has any other Canadian sourced a tire from Maxxis? If so what was the shipping like?

I've done this, but I don't use the Maxxis tire. I can't remember but I think it is either a Conti or Bridgestone that I'm using. I'll try to remember to look and post back.

I'm not too worried if the size is exact. I'm more worried about cost. So I'm gathering that the Maxxis will likely be the least expensive option. Is that the same tire that can also be sourced through Cadillac dealers? I may try that first as I imagine the shipping for a single tire to Canada could be prohibitive.

Called Ben and ordered 2 rings today, he says that the ring will read 74mm-72.56mm but will work for my purpose. I'm a bit skeptical considering its not exact 74.1-72.6 mm as advised on this thread. Should I be worried?

Think about it - 0.1mm is only 1/254"! Should be fine.

So I ordered the more expensive route today. I feel more comfortable paying more and making sure I have the best and safest possible solution. And just to sum it all up to make it easier for others, I'll list what and how I ordered.
2 - "74mm-72.56mm" centering rings (called Ben at 877 533 8473 ext 660 from tire rack and ordered two just in case 1 breaks) at $6.00 plus $6.66 shipping = $12.66 1 - T145/70R-18 Bridgestone Tempa Spare LL tire (called tire rack again since not listed on their web site) at $277 plus $16.07 shipping = $293.07 1 - BMW 36-11-6-768-861 rim (ordered from http://www.worldimpex.com/parts/bmw-...c_1533872.html) at $88.68 plus $20.08 shipping = $108.76 4 - BMW 36-12-1-116-326 rubber valve stem (Called Worldimpex at 800-736-3550 and they combined the order with the rim so I didn't have to pay additional shipping charges, saved $10) at $2.85 plus $0 shipping = $2.85 Total cost of $417.34. Next step is to bring to my local tire dealer to get it all assembled. Thanks to everyone who has participated in this thread. You all helped me come to my decision on going the more expensive route as well as provide great insight. And special thanks to Tom Tarzian and GregW / Oregon. Without you guys, most of us wouldn't even have this option! |

^^the only problem I see with using the above steel wheel (page one of this thread!) is that you have to NOT loose that plastic adpator PLUS you need different wheel bolts bc of the steel wheel. The bolt heads taper in a different fashion. The above steel wheel is from a X5. I am still kind of surpised this wheel clears the larger M3(&1M) brakes.
I don't think you can buy the complete spare wheel and tire like I did over here in DE. But you should be able to buy the alloy wheel and then source a mini donut from TireRack or the like. Here is the alloy wheel for the M3 listed by RealOEM.com http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...74&hg=36&fg=95 Here are some pics of my spare tire setup on my 135i(same alloy wheel!)... jack kit and tools = 71106773536 - 100 euros alloy wheel/tire spare = 36110445045 - 120 euros The original spare tire thread... http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...ht=36110445045 Dackel |

I glued my ring in with a bit of epoxy, though I think the wheel would still work okay without it for temporary use.

Perhaps it does work, it's just that no E92 uses a 17" wheel.
