Think A6 v A7 in Audi parlance or E v CLS for Mercedes. A four door "coupe". As somebody mentioned, it will allow BMW to charge a premium over an "ordinary" sedan.
Somehow my original post got deleted but when Scott mentions "groundbreaking" engine for the F3x, it sounds like the tri-turbo option was selected. InsideLine is apparently saying otherwise.

If this new ///M engine (which will be the basis for so many other halo 3-series M vehicles thru 2016) is going to debut with the new X3M, that just doesn't seem very plausible! In other words, a brand new, hi-tech engine would debut in a M3 coupe, or gran coupe or something other than an older 3-platform SUV that got turned into an ///M. N55 with new/updated turbos and other fancy/lightweight parts fits all the criteria for common sense. Not too new, i.e. tested, can "fit" inside a F25 no problem, an is powerful enough to fit they whole range of announced upcoming vehicles. |

More choices is not necessarily a good thing. Engineering is a compromise and BMW will likely want to have the greater amount of commonality between all the platforms, that means that all models will be less optimized for their particular function.
Not saying the next M will be bad just that people being worried about all the upcoming models are not necessarily being silly. |

This is really funny .. now I am confused ... the same render is on the title of the magazin AutoBild from today ... but with an totally different story!
The big title story of this AutoBild was that BMW has descided to split the F3x series ... F30, F31 and F34 stays as 3er series ... F32, F33 and F35 becomes the new 4er series ... and the M models in form of coupe and convertible would become the lable M4!!! Greets Uli_HH |

It's pretty smart of M to launch the new engine in the X3 M for a while as real world testing. That way before the M3 is launched they can iron out problems with the engine--- plenty of 2001 E46 owners would have been happy about that if it had happened lol.
To all who say that putting it in the X3 M is a big mistake and that they shouldn't recycle the same engine for the M3... I think the mistake you're making is assuming that there won't be any upgraded parts which if its similar to how the M5's S63 is being treated is patently false. Its clear that M has taken the time to tweak the S63 for the M5 with larger intercoolers etc. I would even expect different cams ultimtately. An M3 doesn't weigh nearly as much as the SAV so it wouldn't need as much torque down low (higher cam profiles). |

I still wanna know what block they are using if they are creating a 3.2. The N54 and the N55 can't be bored out that much...

Buying a sedan right now because they'll have ugly tourers for next model. The F3X M3's look ugly anyway. I think the F10 5 series look better than the E60 5-ers but they seriously messed up on the new 3 series.

M3 will remain.
Despite the Coupe , Cabrio and Gran Coupe being renamed 4er. The key is Individuality. M3 is not just a faster 3er it is a totally different car , drives differently and does not even have the same drivetrain.

Like I said before BMW will keep this badge slapping up until people stop buying them. I can tell you now, I have bought a E9X M3 but I will NOT be buying the next M3. The M3 has lost it's roots, hell even the current M3 is so far from it roots that it is almost a joke. Granted I wont be buying a new car for a number of years, but when I do I can tell you it wont be a F3x coupe, grand coupe, touring, sedan....or pickup. It will be a 1M or a porsche. That all depends on where I am in my life and how well birth control has worked. And yes I understand both cars suck for kids, just depends if I have to start saving for their "in state" school. My wife and I got a scholarship to go out of state so if thats what they want to go out of state they better study cause I "aint" paying for that shit and they sure as hell are not taking away from the GT3 RS fund.

Who is running BMW now? Seemed like BMW used to be run by engineers? Anyone remember when the car model used to say everything about the car. I have a 320i beater, wanna guess what engine is in there? yeah, a 2.0L I6. So the next M3 will be off based off the 4 series, sounds massively confusing... |
