Couldn't he sit in an 128/135 too? Is there a difference with the non-M 1 series coupes?

if you sat in 135i with the sport seats, the interior would be the same (spatially). the materials are obviously different. dont forget the 1m has better headroom without the sunroof that most 135s have.
moreover, if you havent sat in one, you obviously havent driven one. go drive one!!! |

All these comments on here implying that the M3 is better because its "bigger" and has an automatic transmission (DCT) suggests to me there are a lot of M3 drivers out there who are not true enthusiasts.....

Yeah, cause you are such an "enthusiast" and can make that judgement of someone else because they choose a DCT transmission versus a 6MT. LOTS of folks who spent many years with a 6MT move to a DCT for performance/other reasons and are every bit as much "enthusiasts" as guys who think a 6MT makes their e-peens larger Please get off you high horse. Rant over... let's not turn yet another thread into a 6MT vs. DCT debate. The M3 is not "better" because it is bigger or has a DCT. However, those features might make it a better car for some people who use the car every day. The factors that do make the M3 better, IMO only, is the S65 engine... both from a performance perspective and from a sound perspective and looks. The one advantage the 1M clearly has is price. Performance in most objective tests is on par or a slight edge to the M3 (unless you live stop light to stop light or on a very tight, short track). Some reviews favour the M3 (most I have read) while some favour the 1M. Pick the car that you like better and it will be great. Last edited by gthal; 08-07-2011 at 08:01 PM.. |

it is not a wise option. There is something that you won't find in the reviews....depending on how you drive, the 1M might not be your best option.
In my personal opinion, as having had a total of 8 turbo cars ( toyota starlet turbo jdm, subaru impreza sti 98 jdm, evo 6 tommy makinen , evo 7, evo 8 and a E92 335i) i can tell you that Turbo engines when they get really warm, you can def see a consistent decrease in performance...while nat aspirated engines will keep punching like cold... Just IMO... Keep the M3, its a classic. |

All ^those kind of comments sound like they come from someone who has been driving for about 15 minutes. "True enthusiasts" love innovation and will try anything.

So I've put in my allocation reservation request and everything looks good for the allocation to be approved. It's still really early in the process so I have time to think this over.
I recently spoke to a wheel manufacturer in the field that has both the M3 and 1M in their company. They contend the 1M edges out the M3 in most performance comparisons. Being an M3 owner, I'm skeptical so I take their evaluation as more of a wash. The one thing that seemed compelling to me was their insane enthusiasm about how much FUN is the 1M in comparison to it's more linear big brother. This I imagine to be correct. With such a weight difference and a shorter wheelbase, it has to be more fun. Ultimately, I'm not trying to answer which one is better, just which one is best suited for me.

This Motortrend review doesn't like the 1m. I posted this one on the m3 forum but it was moved.

Believe me, I read it the moment it came out. It was scathing, but very inconsistent with just about every other review out there. It was almost personal which raises suspicions of its validity. I'm not giving it creedance as I have owned the N54 engine before in my 335i and I've driven the 135i with great joy. I've owned and utilized the M3 chassis. Put all that together and it has to be great. Not only that, but every 1M owner on the boards have been glowing in their feedback including those with both the M3 and 1M. Randy Pobst's "hatred" of the 1M is rooted in something else.

Everyone can have different reaction to the car. I've learned not to trust reviews over my own feelings, which is why I just had to try the M3 (in my case). But with a car as limited as the 1M, you may only have the reviews and gotta go with your gut IMHO.

Just found a Cayman R review by Randy Pobst. He found it "thrilling", one of his "very favorite" cars

I guess we all have to accept the good with the bad. This board really is valuable for balanced perspectives.

No cons if you are okay with a smaller car.. do it, the 1M will be more desirable down the road IMO because of the limited production, the car is a beast also! And in terms of performance, HPF is developing a single turbo that is expected to make 600+whp so plenty of tuning options / potential down the road for some serious upgrades.
