they're more or less the same to me. i've had a 996 carrera before, was a good car. the price is what wins me over. e.g. 50k+ for a 930 turbo? no thanks. 30's for a trophy car when i already have enough to drive... that i can do

Late arrival here today, I guess it's just me but I think the 996 is a great, great, great Porsche. With a bit of work the turbos can eat just about anything that's not a monster 2JZ, and the block/bottom end is absolutely bulletproof on the TT version. I've given a bit of thought to getting one for a weekend/project car, but that would require me to stop dumping money into my 1. Not happenin.

a 2jz can probably get more hp on a dyno (so can a big block buick)... but imo it's not a better car. and i think most would take a 10 yr old turbo over a 15-20 yr old supra if the price is similar

Dude, all it takes is one (god forbid) incident to put you in a serious financial hole. Anecdotally, I've heard it's tough to beat BC/BS.

Oh no question the Porsche is superior dynamically, I was just saying some of those 2JZ builds are nutty in terms of power, even on stock bottoms...I don't really care for the older JDM cars, but the R34 and 2JZ tickle my fancy.

Me personally, I'd rather have a $50k 930 than a $30k 996. Hell, I'd rather have any base 964/993 than any 996.

would you mind elaborating on your experience? I would love to hear from someone that has owned an 800hp GTR first hand.

Yes there are other options, like you said though my 800+ goal narrows it down and my "needs" for a modern car with modern amenities narrows it down even more. Off the top of my head CTS-V, 911 TT, GTR, Corvette. But of those it seems like the CTS-V and GTR would be the easiest to live with day to day. As for the pricing I would rather have a live-able DD for more money. Sure I could pickup a supra and make 1200hp all day long, but how comfortable would I be? probably not very. lol

Sure, to make that kind of power and even have a chance to put it down there is some serious suspension work which gives a trade off on comfort. No matter the money that you spend on suspension it is always going to be harder and less forgiving, which I'm sure you are aware of. I can't speak for you, but I know that, at least in my area, it is a little too stiff to daily it and be comfortable, YMMV. At those power levels you are talking a large amount more money to be dumped into the car. In my case, internals, trans, turbos and all the typical bolt-ons that people have. Howdy all. Can't decide whether Mon or Tues is more of a bummer, on the one hand Monday is right in your face after the weekend, but Tues sneaks up on you and reminds you how far it is until the next weekend. Lol.

Awesome information thank you. If I were to go with the GTR I would definitely go with AMS, I'm thinking along the lines of the Alpha 9. I understand that it wont be cheap and I'm okay with that If I was worried about the cost, I wouldn't be considering going for such a big build. lol, but I gotta have my toys and high HP car is one I don't have yet. I think the stiffness I will be able to live with, I occasionally DD my track cars and those are basically full fledged race cars and its okay. Sounds like you got it all pretty well handled then. Yes, the creature comforts are nice and the GTR certainly has enough of them, though having the 3 to take on a longer trip is also nice since even with the sport suspension it feels like riding on a cloud after that thing haha. As my old man always told me, "He who dies with the most toys wins." so that's where I'm going as well. AMS is always a solid choice, it's who I have always had do any work on my previous cars; they know exactly what they are doing and aren't scared to tell you that they need to bring in somebody else for certain things.

I honestly don't know how much I'm into the thing at this point, and, in all honesty, I don't know if I would want to know either. Between buying the car new, and upgrading in stages, where some parts had to be purchased more than once (injectors for example) I wouldn't be overly surprised if I'm like $150-170k in at this point. If we ever happen to be in the same place and I have the car, you may certainly go for a ride.

Neither I really wouldnt call it a race car as I don't want to gut it and throw a cage in it. ( i already have a couple of those anyway lol) I just want a car that gets me into super car performance territory without the super car prices. I would say I don't have a set limit just yet as I don't know what direction i'm going. But for the platform I would say 50-60k should get me a nice used (I never buy new) example of anything I can turn into what I want. Something like that I could live with, especially if I follow my plan of building it over a couple years instead of all at once like I usually do.

I wouldn't say I have it well handled lol, I know what I want and I guess I'll just have to work on getting the details together, I plan on buying used (I never buy new) I'm still not sure which car I'll go with so I think my next steps will be to go out and test drive my options. Wow that's a considerable amount of money, but as the old saying goes "Fast, Cheap, Reliable pick two" I'm guessing yours falls under the fast and reliable category which is exactly what I am after. Ha, you have it better handled than most that I have talked to on the subject, so I think you are ahead of the curve. I bought new with the complete intentions of just driving it (yeah right haha) and having a car that was both fast and comfortable, needless to say, that didn't last long. You are correct, only thing I really ever have to do is put fuel in the thing, new tires and change the oil, other than that, it just goes. I refuse to go "cheap" just to be able to go fast and have to do it over again a few times. Not a problem, it's nice to talk to other people who understand it vs the people around me who think I'm insane.

What do you have for function built race cars if you don't mind me asking?

Exactly what I want. I agree on doing it right the first time even if it will cost an arm and a leg.

I've built a few over the years my 3 most memorable are an 06 Accord coupe that I built with the intention of "oh shit, did that accord just beat that m3?" lol, I sold it off a couple years ago and the new owners are actually competing in a couple series with it. Last I heard it broke the 2 minute mark around buttonwillow the other two I still own, an 87 Porsche 924s that I built to race in 944 spec (actually got my NASA competition license for that) but I unfortunately couldn't "make it" and paying out of pocket to keep competing was very expensive, a sponsor would have been nice. and my latest is a Porsche 928s built for fun at the track no serious competition. Its still completely built though (mainly for safety) this is my favorite track car to date, 450whp/tq in a 2600lb car
