I had some left over Redline 10w60 which I added in. I'm sure Redline 0w40 should be fine as well. I just didn't buy Redline 0w40. As others have mentioned their 0w40 is a bit thicker than other 0w40 formulations but is still be thinner than TWS.

You mentioned on your sample that the 2nd report you ran mix of M1 0W40 and TWS. How many quarts of TWS did you put in? You also noted that you topped up with 1 quart of oil, is that M1 or TWS? Just curious =) Will be changing my oil soon for the summer months, going to run a mix of M1 and TWS as well. Thanks!

Cost IMHO, really no advantage to either oil. I am not a fan of Redline products though.

I mentioned that I am running TWS and M1 mix in my current oil change. I have not done an analysis on that yet. This should be in my next analysis. It is 5 quarts of 0w40 with 4 liters of TWS.

My first analysis was mostly 0w40 with 2 quarts of Redline 10w60 in it.

Track guys: How does the M1 0w-40 hold up during HPDE, during warmer ambient temps 85+F. Any issues with this oil over the OEM 10-60? How often would you change this vs the OEM?

I would think that for daily driving and even spirited driving, the motor and oil is being significant less stressed and doesn't come close to track driving.

Switch to 10w60 for track events

I have to check but I think TWS' additive package might be a little more robust than M1's.

One of Redline's selling points is that is has more phosphorus and zinc than BMW oils. I'm not a fan of redline gear and tranny lubes...never used their oil.

In spring temps 60 and below, it held up fine during HPDE. Now the summer is here, switched to Total racing 10W50, for improved protection, without going as thick as the castrol 10W60.

We've already hit wintery weather in Western Australia, and one thing I can say is that M1 0w-40 warms up so quickly and stays so hot, there is no comparison to TWS 10w-60. With TWS, it would have taken me at least 20 minutes of driving to reach a temperature I feel comfortable to push the car, but with M1, it takes as half or less time, and the engine is free-revving from start up. But the proof will be in the oil analysis which I am planning at 6km on the oil which will see me partial summer driving, and may be in extreme conditions too.

What I like to hear is how does the Shell 10w-60 compare with TWS 10w-60? Surely, viscosity aside, there will be a lot that are not common. Any thoughts?

Saw today really bad bearings and the owner was using BMW-83212365944 .
And BMW-83212365944 = Shell 10w-60 => https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...z3-07510009420
# 4 + 7 on this page => http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...0#post17925540
So is this Shell 10w-60 oil better or worse ?
Think it's all about our bearings no matter what oil/brand/spec .

Think I will switch to M1 0W-40 this week as well.

I posted an oil analysis with 0w40 where I ran it all day in 105+ degree weather on track, half a dozen autocross events and 4000 miles of street driving on it. The car ran fine and the oil analysis looked great. I would not run 0w40 more than 5000 miles as it is not designed for the long drain intervals that TWS is.

High temps are no problem for the oil. Whether you feel comfortable with running it on track is up to you.

Here is my post:

Thanks for the input re: 0W-40 on track days.
I ended up switching the OEM to Liquid Moly 10w-60. I have a track day this sat so I will see how it does. Old oil will be going to blackstone.

I asked a couple people at the track, including shops and their mechanics and they all unanimously said "no 0w-40, stick with 10w-60". Coincidentally (or not), they saw S65 engine failures that occurred when using 0w-40. Take it for what it's worth, not trying to stir anything up.

I am currently running a TWS and 0w40 mix right now. I have 3 track days planned with this mix and I will run the analysis on it. I've ran a lot of track days on straight 0w40 so far and have analyses for each oil change. Car is running great. It revs faster and runs more smoothly than TWS. You can scroll back in this thread to see my analyses.

While I have nothing against TWS... Liqui Moly is a different thing. It is a lot thicker than TWS which makes it not flow as well as TWS. I would definitely try to avoid running straight Liqui Moly and Redline 10w60 in the M3. You're going the opposite direction than 0w40 and going thicker than TWS.

I think you are correct. I have only driven ~25 miles on the Liqui moly, and it doesn't feel as peppy as the OEM castrol. Would the thickness help at elevated ambient/track temps (ambient 85F+ track days where oil is 270F+)?

Sure daily driven it will not see anywhere close to those temps...

I don't know about protection at high temps but it's less lubrication for the rod bearings because it's thick and has to squeeze into the tight bearings. Maybe it thins out at higher temps to flow better?

I'd say sticking to TWS or the new Shell oil is better for the engine than Liqui Moly.

Take a look at post #15. This is what I found and ultimately made me stick with the 10w-60.

The whole point of going with 0w40 is to have a thinner oil. That means thinner at higher temps too. Thinner is better for rod bearings and the car in general. All the tolerances are super tight so you want the oil to be able to squeeze into all the small spaces. Lighter weight oil also cools better as it absorbs the heat from the engine and dissipates it faster.

That's also why TWS 10w60 is lighter weight than most aftermarket 10w60 oils.

0w-40 is coming out and 50/50 0w-40/5w-50 going in for the summer tomorrow, all Mobil1. My hope is that this combo will give me a nice thin startup weight of around 2.5 and a warm weight closer to 50 with significant zddp and shear reduction.

I wouldnt fret about this in most climes, but living in the SW US I am anticipating a few solid months of triple digit temps coming up

As I said before, these days I am mainly resigned to city driving and was averaging 13-14l/100km. Since switching to M1 0w-40 it has dropped to 12L/100km. Now this is over the last 2k km or so. The oil level so far has remained the same and as per the fill at the change.

Phil, you're absolutely correct. It comes down to the initial set up of the bearing ... which means oil is not a factor in the failure.

Exactly !
There were winners and losers (S65's) who left the German factory .
And the only thing we can hope is that we have winners ...And only the future will tell .
In other words... and like I said before..."It's actually a German lottery"
