avusm3, what type of usage did your car see? Did you do a lot of track days?

Zero track days (that is what the race car is for...)

In any case, BMW should be ashamed of selling these ticking time bombs to us. Castrol or Mobil 1, it doesn't appear to matter, these things fail far, far too often for a production car.

Okay. I'm just trying to gather information that led up to the failure. How long did you use M1 0W40 for before the failure? And what were your oil change intervals? Any UOA's?

Because mostly on this forum they say it's only "Internet Hysteria" ? ![]() Feel really sorry about your luck ,and I agree 100% with your comment . Honestly I need nerves of steel.... to write no longer dirty words addressed to the brand of 3 letters ! Congrats for using the right word for the S65 ,think I was the first person to use that word ! And the counter rises again....

Doesn't Bavarian MOTOR Works realize that even ardent Bimmer-philes will "jump brand" with such reduced confidence in a marquee model MOTOR such as in the quintessential M car as the M3. (?)
It is their middle name! I think we would all fall over (holding our tablets, smart phones or notebooks) if SOMEONE from BMW replied/responded/added insight here. In this litigious world, the crime here is their conscious losing/letting go of a hard fought and won customer following. Do they also not realize they would earn and secure lifetime customers by stepping in to address this officially. I am speaking for myself here, but have a feeling some of you would agree.

Recently having a touch of BMW's officiall support on such a simple matter as a wrongly serviced DCT box, showing a laid back response time close to arrogance and un willingness to provide guidance based on experience I know they have, has made me think. I have been an absolute Bimmer fan for years but must say once I got in touch with the customer focus the glory have started to fall. Big time. |

And once the ball starts to roll....this would be the same as a recognition of the Worldwide problem and that would cost who knows how much...surely not small numbers , at least if there is a solution . So for me personal it's only possible when "judicial forced" , but think it's more like a "fata morgana" ! In other words....Replacing S65's under warranty is a lot cheaper than the Worldwide fix . And when out of warranty...the better ,and their cash register is ringing again .... So it's like I said above in 2 words...."Financial speculation" ![]()

My engine has also just failed. Front main bearing/s seized at 52000Km (32000miles). There was no warning signs at all (no ticking noise). I was driving on a skid pan at the time, so lots of sideways action, but not exactly revving the pants off it.
My car is a RHD e90 that was built in October 2011 (one of the very last e90's). It was completely stock engine wise. It had always used quite a lot of oil. Maybe 1Lt every 6 months or so on top of services. The car was 2 months out of warranty. Luckily BMW Aus are replacing the motor completely free of charge as good will. This is our 3rd BMW (also had an X6 50i and 550i). All of which have gone to absolute shit right around the 3 year mark. Over it |

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

wasn't there an early discussion about the lower octane level of the fuel in Australia, leading to detonation and possibly causing the the high failures there?

There seems to be fewer blown motors in Europe, but we also buy most of the //M cars in the US. I also know the S85 seem to blow all around the World, including Europe. I don't know how many S65/S85's are in OZ, but I do know they're VERY expensive there, so I'm guessing not that many compared to Europe or US, but you see them represented here pretty well. ![]() .

AUS, thanks for the good information.
I've been following this issue for several years now. I have concern for my car because my last blackstone report had 24ppm lead and this most recent one had 14ppm which is an improvement, but still considered slightly high. Fingers crossed.

I believe it was the opposite. Guys claiming octane/detonation killing bearings pointed to AU as a model of perfection with their 98 RON gasoline (~ 94 octane US). I remember responding to that by showing them a few examples of blown motors in AU. That list has grown a few times since.

Contrary to the fuel hypothesis, one could look at the data and say it's climate related as well. The places that seem to have the fewest failures are the coldest climates.
