Pretty much, technically if you put a post 74 engine that was factory fitted with emissions devices then I believe you have to retain the emissions stuff but on a pre 74 car it's not like anyone is ever going to check up on you as long as it isn't obnoxiously loud so basically do whatever you want

Another fun smog topic not too many people are clear on. The Biannual smog testing is not a state wide program, it varies by county actually. The following counties are completely exempt to the biannual testing regardless of what year the vehicle is:
Alpine Amador Calaveras Del Norte Humboldt Imperial Inyo Lake Lassen Mariposa Mendocino Modoc Mono Plumas Sierra Siskiyou Trinity Tuolumne And portions of these 6 counties are exempt based on zip code: El Dorado Placer Riverside San Bernardino San Diego Sonoma

There is an interesting thread on e46 right now regarding the "best" NA engine of all time. It's clear from the answers that most of those guys don't know anything about cars lol.
What do you guys think? I think the Honda F20c is one of the best (if not, the best) engines of all time. For it's size, it makes an incredible amount of power (nearly 125hp/L), has a 9000 redline, and will last for 500,000 miles (more, I'm sure, but no F20c has reached that yet) with nothing more than oil changes. Some of you guys will probably think that I'm crazy, but I know Jason has to agree (at least partly) with me on this one lol. |

NA 20b 3 rotor for me. Non turbo rotary engines are very reliable and the 3 rotor makes about the same power as a decently modded turbo 2 rotor, plus the exhaust note of a 20b with port work is damn sexy.
Ive always loved the Chevy dz302 as well, a small block v8 that would rev past 7000rpm from the factory in 1967 is damn cool.

hmmm, thinking about it... didn't the smog laws first comeinto place around 1968? i thought it was car's and engine pre-68? more than likely you're correct though. Quote:

That's why Hotrodders like to work on older engine blocks and tune them up, its sort of a way around the rule.. So as soon as you put an engine built in 2007 into your older car, you need to have 2007 emissions equipment. According to the article you cannot use a foreign engine. See bottom of Page 2... http://www.epa.gov/compliance/resour.../engswitch.pdf Another situation recently brought to EPA's attention involves the offering for sale of used foreign-built engines. These engines are often not covered by a certified configuration for any vehicle sold in this country. In such a case, there is no way to install such an engine legally. EPA has recently brought enforcement actions against certain parties who have violated the tampering prohibition by performing illegal engine switches. Page 2 at the bottom says something else about the model year... It should be noted that....the EPA's policy allows engine switches as long as the resulting vehicle matches exactly to any certified configuration of the same or newer model year as the chassis... So the older the chassis the more engine options you have...I personally like the style of the E92 meaning my engine choices are 2007+ only. I can't go and put in a Supra's 2JZGTE into an E92 Chassis...that would be one sweet conversion though.... Article that explains the same thing a bit more... http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Che..._V-8_Smog.html Last edited by Bowser330; 02-01-2012 at 06:25 PM.. |

about the foreign engines... this is something the honda crowd ignores hahaha.we get all our engines from Japan. the euro-spec (in terms of BMWs) and JDM engines produce more power so of course we want to have them in our cars over here. the nature of being a car guy. thanks for posting yousif. good info. needed a reminder

I can't think of many older engines that I would put in a newer body, but the other way around.... I can think of many good swaps.
I saw a Datsun 1500 the other day and was thinking of how cool an RB swap would be (not even sure if the 1500 can handle that sort of power lol). |
