It's going to go lower so wait to buy IMO.

I am thinking of selling off most of my stuff & just holding cash for a bit & then likely use a chunk to buy low at some future TBD date...

I'll be working till I die either way so does it really matter?!

That sounds terrible.

Better be prepared for a forced retirement as it happens to most folks that think "they'll work until they die".

Yep! Forced retirement is a certainty.

If you sell -- stocks in this context -- then you lock in your losses. And you are then out of the market. A decision to sell requires a decision of when to buy.

Studies have shown not being in the market when there's a real turn around really impacts one's gains. The first few days of a market rebound -- a true rebound and not a dead cat bounce -- are critical for realizing the best gains.

At the advice of my father-in-law my wife and I started investing in the
market in 1991. We went to his financial advisor/investment broker. I will
never forget her advice. She told us straight out that the market will have
ups and downs; sometimes BIG downs. Don’t panic, don’t sell; Your dividends
will purchase more stocks during the down times and when the market
recovers, you’ll have more.

She was right. We weathered the 2008/2009 debacle, We sat firm and
didn’t sell. Yes, the come back took 6 years, but we came out smelling
like a rose. Meanwhile, my brother-in-law (who never took his dad’s advice)
panicked and ended up losing his ass.

Agreed. By CNBC and other media outlets for making up headlines. I just watched the Hassett interview, which took place an hour before the market opened, and he did not suggest any pause was forthcoming. If there is another interview I missed or some other source please let me know.

Nevertheless, what happened this morning highlights the reason you can’t try to time things. I would guess there are some who sold when the market opened, then panicked and bought back in when the media put out the false headlines.

lol to be fair the part about doubling Chinas tarrifs even further was true and then set more fuel to the fire... we need to stop this because we will get wrecked soon... all the EU / Asia has to do is tariff all of our services... specifically tech and its game over

All I’ve done is go through each of my funds/ETFs to be sure they didn’t have too much leverage, because that could kill them. Turns out I was safe, but if not I would have sold those and taken whatever loss I had to, then bought back into the other funds/ETFs I like with less leverage when I thought the time was right. Might be now, but still pretty choppy so I don’t see any problem in waiting.

China is calling Trump's bluff. China has so many means to weather this storm and put the US in an even worse spot. They can seriously damage US agriculture which means we'll have to subsidize even more, they could call in US debt, China could squash it's Panama Canal deal, etc. The US administration is playing a vary dangerous game with China.

What do you mean by "call in" U.S. debt? They can dump it and not buy anymore, but how would they call what they hold?

China has a lot to lose too. But China has a higher tolerance for letting their people suffer than the U.S. Both sides need to negotiate as things are clearly not going back to status quo. Hopefully both sides seed the mutual benefit to start negotiating before something like Covid-25 happens.

what?

China is the exporter, we are the importer... they can export to every other country and even lower prices to mess w us if they want.

They can find alternative markets to sell to far quicker than we can to buy from... everyone could raise their prices to screw us and multiple countries can even gang up on us.

A 104% tarrif on Chinese goods, means everything doubles in price... strong negotiation... lol... especially when dealing w a nation that cannot back down to save face as it is seen as weakness...

So you think this will have no impact on them and they can easily just shift their trade elsewhere? Sure, ok.

Double my current age and it's still not at/within the retirement age. With that in mind, my Roth IRA, 401k, etc. are all based on the riskier mutual fund offerings and stocks but potential for higher gains. Worked out so far. YTD 401k loss is 8.21% but life to date (last three years) is 35.43%.

My $0.02 for others in my age range:
I prioritize low expense ratio mutual funds - so more $ stays in my pocket. Target retirement date funds are a scam. Too little potential for growth with too high of an expense ratio.
Leave emotions outside. Ex: I may or may not like/support/care about Tesla/Elon but point is the company makes a thing and and people buy it. I think it will be ok in the long run so I got in earlier than some and even now, I'm in the green. Same with Altria.
Lastly, selling when in the red to cut losses is a scam when young. Just stop buying that asset if you want and pivot to something else. Look at it X days/weeks/months/years later. Probably not red anymore. And if it is - chances are your other gains engulfed it.

I sort of want 104% tariffs on China just so middle America sees how stupid the decision making the current administration has and how bad of a deal maker we have in charge. Maybe it will cause the stupidity in all facets of the government to stop.

it will hurt the importer who actually needs the goods far more not the one with a completely planned and regulated economy that can create the goods then and print money to buy them... lol
