Oil temps high?

Did some more research and it looks like the oil level sensor doubles as the oil temperature sensor - which is why we're not finding it anywhere on it's own.

Aside from this - the cluster reading is oil temp ONLY - not a combined calculation from a single or both sensors.

Thought I would get in on this.....

This is an 80 degree day in Southern California, after a couple of redline pulls.
Keep in mind I replaced my thermostat, flushed my cooling system, and did an oil change not even 3,700 miles ago.

Big gold star to Mike Benvo for proving the 8+ yr old threads wrong about the fake oil temp gauge. Turns out ... it is indeed an oil temp gauge.

BTW these cars are 9 years old in some cases. Crazy huh.

I'm getting an oil change and will see what's up after that. It's all stock, ie 10w-60 btw.

Sidenote: I'd be lying if I hadn't spent 2 hours on bebearings website last night when I couldn't sleep...

For the record, I proved that the oil level sensor doubles as a temp sensor, and ended this nonsense, not Mike. Took me some digging in old 2005 E60 M5 engine photo scanned documentation that I have. As for knowing that the coolant temp sensor is not measuring oil temperature, I suspect 95% of people on the forum with a modicum of common sense knew that despite the years long confusion, but thanks..

I did some driving in 90 deg F temperature today around town and the needle barely moved above 210 clearing the white mark but only just, nothing as dramatic as some pictures above. In the winter when close to freezing it's not uncommon for the engine to take 20 minutes to reach 210 F.

What catches more of my attention in the summer is how much less powerful and a little dry and clunky the engine feels compared to winter when it runs much smoother (after warmup) and more powerful. I think i would hate it if i lived in cali, arizona or texas and this was my daily driver. Some of that is expected for N.A. engines with oxygen density being lower in hot days but the difference in smoothness between the seasons that's bmw engineering QC in my view.

Well, this is interesting. Seems conclusive that the gauge is displaying engine oil temp so I believe my gauge is innacurate especially if Carly utilizes the same source. The gauge is consistently displaying higher than the Carly device.

When did you first change your bearings and how many times have you had to change them?

Today it was 87F and my temp was around this after hauling ass the entire way home....lots of WOT so this seems unusual.

On normal days 70F-80F cruising my temps will stay right below the mid line.

Just took that now after a few WOT pulls and it's 77F outside.

Timothy, left you a note regarding Carly further up in this thread. Believe you should read oil temp picking another parameter. Your gauge might still turn out ok.

Timothy, did you try "Output value for motoroeltemperature"? I find this to correlate very well with my gauge. While the "Motor temp" seems to be coolant, coming up sooner in temp but staying below the oil temp.
Never got the "Coolant" on Carly to work btw but pretty sure above gives whats needed i.e oil and coolant temp separately.

Because of this thread I happened to look at my oil temp yesterday, had been driving in town and just hit the highway...outside air temp registered 104, doing 63 mph, oil temp about 1/8 inch past 210.

I want to know where you and Mike are seeing information the the oil LEVEL sensor producing temperature information. There is no filament for temperature in the device. I'm still calling bullshit on this. Not to mention there is no TIS available to back up your guys claim.

Nash btw, just to make you feel less lonely my car behaved the same way. First two year pretty much always half a needle below 210. A year or so ago, it started a come up a needle above soon as I gave it some or even down town/stop and go. Bit frustrated at start with but have kinda get used to it. I have currently 32k on the clock. Noticed today a good needle and a half above during town crusing, 18'C.

I looked for that parameter .last time I was driving and did not see it but will look again next time I am in the car. Really appreciate the info.

Timothy, here's a screen shot from the parameters I use. Again the "Output value for motoroeltemp" I'm pretty sure is oil (and following the gauge spot on) while the "Motortemp" is coolant. In this case fairly recently started hence the coolant coming up faster than the oil temp.

PS. The "Oil level sensor" is another interesting bit, presenting the oil level immediately (not waiting for ages like the gauge). Been following this during a number of oil changes/top ups, seems to produce relevant levels.

Something I noticed yesterday. Why does temps stay cooler with the AC on?
AC off my needle moved a bit higher to the right.

Turning on the A/C normally triggers the operation of an auxiliary cooling fan in most cars. I would guess that our M3s are no different.

Update. Goddamnit. This is not normal.

Btw - oil / filter change today w 10w-60 oil at dealer. This is driving normally. In traffic.

Something is up. Either incorrect reading or high temps. It was just below the mark between 210 and 300 and by time I snapped pic, dropped a bit.
