I don't care so much for when or how they use the coveted "M" badge. Hell, we us enthusiast know the difference and that is all that matters. Otherwise, shut up and drive, there's no car like a True "M" car. Yes, there's faster cars, maybe even better cars, but the sheer pleasure you get from driving your M3/4/5/6 is just priceless...

I think I've heard this all before (& I mean no disrespect to the OP .Hope he moves on to bigger & better things) .I heard it when the E46 M3 was being replaced with the e9x M3. Now I hear it with replacement of the E9x with the newest m3/4. Yet each time it changes very few people actually move on to something different. They change it, it takes some time getting used to. As already said the real M cars will remain just that......Oh BTW I will never ever EVER give a sh!t what that bloated sack of crap Jeremy Clarkson has to say. I can only imagine the only thing worse then that mans ego is his breath. I will never understand while so many people put so much faith in words from a many that is on a variety show.

On the subject of the picture. If you like the old car and don't like the new car because things have changed, I don't get the logic of complaining about it and then saying (maybe not you in particular) that BMW and M is losing its soul because its changing. Would you buy an iPhone 6 if it were exactly the same as an iPhone5? Yeah, what's the point? You can either enjoy the car you have now as much as you can or you can find a way to freeze the time space continuum so that BMW just keeps producting 2012 cars for an eternity. Are you saying that M is being whored out and you don't like it? Let me burst your bubble, it was whored out LONG before you bought your E92 M3...non-homologated and not a REAL M car by the pure definition and mission of the original BMW Motorsports division. Did you know that the M division also does BMW Individual? That's not very motorsport related? And the Motorsport division was separate from the M division that made the M cars for awhile until recently. So I can rag on your E9X M3 not being a real M just as much as you can speculate that the next series of M performance models aren't real M cars. I've seen these threads for the past 5 years...

Sorry to go off topic, but it somewhat relates to the F80. Did you also own an earlier example of the NSX with hydraulic steering, given that the 2005 had EPS? Was there any noticeable difference in steering feel, or is the "EPS is horrible" blown out of proportion? My only EPS cars have been my current S2000 (which has terrible steering feel compared to my M3), and a previous VW GTI which was quite good surprisngly.

The steering in the NSX was excellent. http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Technical/eps.htm

there's a thread down here talking about eps-
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=772614 i agree with hothonda that the eps in the nsx was excellent.it was standard on all nsx's except zanardis from 95 on.before 95,it was only on the few auto trans-equipped cars. http://www.nsxprime.com/wiki/Changes...anges_for_1995 |

RD,
No worries mate, I'm sure the new M3/M4 will be an awesome car. I should be so lucky to get into another M3. Don't think I can justify buying another $70k+ car in the future. So for now, I'm gonna enjoy the heck out of this one and keep it as long as I can. I've been a fan since the E46 M3, I'd have gotten one if they were still selling it NEW. You've been lucky enough to own both. Enjoy the ride!

I have owned 2 (m6 e63, and M3 e90) and soon to be a 3rd M vehicle (F12 M6)
I am certainly annoyed that you can get an "M performance package" anything, but realize that 80% of the components of an "M" vehicle are exclusive to M vehicles. |

How insecure do you have to be to come up with a statement like "this will be my last M3 because I'm not special anymore...whah whah whah"
If you truly enjoy driving and is a true M enthusiast, why would you care if another car rolls up with a M135 or M whatever badge on their trunk lid? I always see non M BMWs with a M badge in So. Cal. And when we are side by side at a light, I know I worked hard to acquire my M3, and it's a true M car...but does the guy next to me really thinks he's in a M car? I pity the guy almost, I'm just so grateful that I'm able to enjoy a true M car, and it's not about the badge. You can slap a Ford badge on a 458 Italia, but will that suddenly detunes the car 300hp, and make it sound like an EcoBoost? |

I could careless what people think about my car. Most think it is just another 3 series. I did not buy it for what people thought of it. I bought it for me.

If you're old like me you will recall hearing this kind of whining long before there was an internet to whine on. Usually it amounts to nothing and the new car turns out to be just fine as I expect the new 3/4 to be.
It wont be for me though, I hope to be settled in at our next place by that time and I'll be swapping back to a crossover and a sports car and this one gets traded. Not a shot at this car, I come to appreciate it more all the time but I would rather get something more to the point along with something I can throw a tv in for when I actually need to go someplace for a reason. |

Yeah, it saves me the effort of trying to debadge and somehow flatten the power bulge in the hood. BMW has taken the effort out of transforming my car into a true sleeper.

BMW knows pissing off a subgroup within the already niche group of enthusiasts isn't going hurt them financial and will only erode brand equity by a small percentage. There's simply more to gain by making the M badge more accesible to all generations who aspire to have a piece of its heritage.
They know that when push comes to shove, as long as they produce the true M cars, a majority of enthusiasts will still buy the cars. Keep in mind, there aren't many other better options that compete with what the M3 delivers today (I mean "king of the hill" more than 4 years running...)

booohooo they put an M on other models. Whys everyone crying about it? Is it diminishing the prestige of your car?
Dont get an Audi S model. They now have S4 and the A4 S Line LOL. You can get the S line package on just about any audi. All the appearance without the go. You can get AMG Appearance package on all Mercedes. Or you can get a porsche which looks the same as every 911 in the line up with slightly different front bumpers. The one thing that I will admit makes me mad is the fake audio on the M5. That is stupid. At least Lexus hired Yamaha to make their LFA sound REAL. BMW should be ashamed.
