Its actually pretty easy once you start to get into it. There's a tendency to skip the basics and put the camera on auto and be done with it. And you'll get fairly good photos that way. If you really spend the time up front learning the basics like the OP mentioned and maybe read a book about it then in about a month or two of shooting applying what you learned you'll be well on your way to good images...and a lot of fun too. Just stick with it.
