Just wondering if it sticks and removes easily with little to no residue.

I came off really easily, there was a little residue and I mean tiny that was easily to wipe of with a microfiber cloth. Here are some photos.

Just wait until you drive behind guys with slicks and r-comps. You'll get chips on the windshield, roof, side of the car, behind the wheels will get sand blasted.
I just quit caring...

I've been seeing a lot of people use plasti-dip lately, blanket on a few coats and then peel it off when you're done.
When painters tape leaves residue then it's more trouble than it is worth. |

Hmm, not bad lookin on lighter colored car. On a black car, it looks horrible.
But, ughhh, that 1M style bumper...

I'm telling you, paint shield 5720 works just fine and is easy to apply and remove. It's inexpensive too. A gallon shipped is like $35-40. I've used it twice and there is still 3/4 to 7/8 of a gallon left. I use a new foam roller and disposable plastic roller pan for each application so there's another $5 gone. Try it, you'll like it (no affiliation, etc.).

So you clear bra the whole car. If you're that anal retentive to clear bra the entire car you're probably the not kind of person willing to deal with a wrinkle in your clear bra. It becomes an expensive and losing battle...I fought it and was beat into submission. Right now, the biggest issue is not the front but the sides of the car. I get more chips in the paint there on my E46. I'm sure the brake fluid fountain from a busted pressure bleeder hose didn't help the paint but that's a different story

On the new car, I have (Xpel) clear bra on the entire car (except the CF roof). So far, after 7 track days, it's 2 thumbs up. The Xpel installer didn't have film for the windshield, so I had a different guy put on llumar brand and that film after 7 track days is definitely scuffed up (can feel the roughness when going over it with microfiber - the clear coating on it is obviously not durable as that of the Xpel film).

Im a track newb and a bit of an aesthetics queen so all I can say is that the tape is cheap and works for crappy drivers like myself. It is as thick as clear bra and easy to remove. I think it would be worthy on a cost/benefit analysis for anyone that is looking to protect their paint.
I think it would work well on the side skirts, bumper and hood. Its only $20 per roll which covers hood and bumper. So I dont think thats a bad deal. But I am just trying to help. better than paying $100 for Track Tape which is the same thing.

And, since I used to race, I understand fully the effect of sticky tires and rocks. Heck, we used to run RA-1s as street tires on my wife's 2.8 Z3! The E90 M3 isn't a lifer car for us so I'm trying to keep it 'nice'. I paint on the temporary protection on the front, bumper, and mirrors of the car. I probably should do a strip up on the roof and on the 'hips', as you noted. However, I'm usually not behind folks anyway, so it's not that big of a deal. My point is that for temporary track protection, this stuff is super easy to put on and take off. I'm talking like 15-20 minutes on each end. No biggie.

Reviving an old one here.
I am exploring the different temporary paint protection alternatives for track and road tripping. I tried clear plasti-dip tonight. This was my first attempt and I am positive I can get better results on my next go. Here is a before and after of my hood. For only about $18 worth of materials, id say its not too bad. I doubt I will get any hood rock chips on my upcoming 1,300 mile road trip. |
