We've already been down this road in other threads. No M sport is not M, not even close. The only people who think they are even close are the M340 bros who want to justify their purchase. They call M owners "insecure" when in reality it's them who are insecure.
There's a bespoke nature in the way M cars are designed and engineered, as well as a degree of exclusivity and rarity that they possess. On this topic, this spoiled chick at work had her daddy buy her an M240. She keeps telling me I "bought your dream car" and it irritates the hell out of me. The M240 is a great car, but the M2 is in a class of its own. You ain't driving an M2.

I didn't buy it because I thought it was an M. I bought it, because I liked it, and it has an inline 6, and is a nice ride, and I can afford it. I could give a crap what badges are on it or not on it. When people ask, I tell them...I'm getting/got/have a 'BMW 340i' Leaving out the M and xdrive. But whatever.
You get irritated when your coworker thinks she has your dream car?? That's insecurity, bro... |

My biggest fear, and what prevented me from buying my first bmw for years was the perception that bmw owners are a buncha douchewaffles. Now I know why there is that perception. Go enjoy your car-whatever badges it has on it.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Porsche dealership said that this M318i is the fastest Cayman ever made by BMW. It is a real M car, has the M-Sport package, and even the "i" package to make it extra fast. Bonus, it is red, which makes it even faster.

I don't think it's a bad thing; park an M-sport right next to an M and esthetically they are similar, but not identical. The same undoubtedly can be said about the performance and handling of the two.
And myself (going from a 428 to 440 to M4) can say that there is a progression in performance and the caliber of the machine from one to the next. Clearly, some BMW enthusiasts enjoy aspects of the non-M models as well as those of the true M division machines; price, performance, esthetics...if BMW is able to provide a product that is an amalgam of these qualities that brings more people to market; than good for them. Hopefully those same enthusiast will keep progressing forward (as I have) to keep demand for such magnificent M machines high in the best interests of all those involved; including us.

I don't see any M performance people saying their car is an M but the M guys are constantly reminding the M performance guys they aren't a true M. We get it and don't even care. You think the M340i guys bought the car so they can tell everyone they have an M3 now or something? Broken record. I got the car for exactly what it is. An awesome sports sedan. Period. Go yell at BMW for putting Ms on the car. IDGAF what they call it.

I've seen plates like 'IM NOT M' on an M240 (even posted it on this forum once), owners are generally self-aware. Yet there's always someone losing their mind over the fact that it's not a real ///M And that's her loss why let it bother you

I've owned both. My 435 with the M performance package definitely had some more sporty looks compared to the regular 4 series, but it certainly drove nothing like an M. Night and day difference. When I had it I never thought it was an M and owning several M's now I don't harbor any ill will towards BMW for putting it on there or for the people that have them. Certainly doesn't affect me if someone else is driving around with an M on their car, even if it is the elusive M528i (seen at the Marriott in Greenville when I did my PCD)

I keep hearing "stepping up to an M3/M4". But the same people saying that are driving a 100k mile M3/M4 worth 20-30k. A 2021 M340i goes for 55-60k in SoCal, I am sure if they wanted to drive an M3 they would drive it.
Lets just enjoy our cars for what they are. M340i is very nice car! M or not. BMW is the only one with the right to say if it's M or not. Not the enthusiasts. |

In the end, BMW is a business and putting more M's on cars for cheaper prices likely does help with sales. In recent years BMW seems to have gone from an enthusiast brand to a cars for the people brand, so I can't fault them for trying to make money.

I`m under no Illusion that my M sport is not a true M - I do think (maybe wrongly) that with my MHD map I can keep up with most standard true M`s and consider myself in the club - with respects
p.s. I would never dream of adding badges and have held off removing them too as i'm prude o my cars pedigree Last edited by Chapperss; 04-02-2021 at 05:06 PM.. Reason: I would never dream of adding badges |

In my view, 'M cars' should have a specific set of performance features: - (semi) floating disc brakes - LSD - controversial one: S designated performance engine. That last one is very controversial. Because the 1M, imho one of the greatest M cars, has an N54 engine. Also, the difference between S and M/N/B engines gets smaller and smaller. And M sport cars (m240i etc) are more and more available with proper LSD's (torque vectoring) They also get better and better brakes, although they still don't have semi floating rotors I believe.
