So any progress? Any good news for us? I know you've been working on a solution "project" for a while now. How's that going? Lots of people are interested in this as you probably know... |

I think that the best thing is to wait until the HD screen and the CIC show up on eBay cheap and buy the rest of the parts new at the dealer (console, controller and the two harnesses/cables)... anyway, we have to wait until some coding also is available.
Something else: if the Google search feature (Info) is to be also enabled with this iDrive retrofit, the Assist TCU has to be the GSM version and not the CDMA version. This new TCU started being installed in BMW's since production 04/08. |

2009 M3 iDrive knob in a 2008 M3
I think I saw a thread about this but cant find it, I read that you could swap the iDrive control knob from an 09 to the 08 center console. of course it would need some cutting and trimming to make it fit.
my question is would the buttons around the knob work too?

All the functions of the 09' knob work the only thing is the fitment with console. Either buy the new console or cut your exisiting one. But functions and knob both swap over

OK, may be somewhat "off-topic" (sorry for that), but I am still wondering why everybody is so obsessed with the iDrive knob when the voice recognition tool works so well!! I press on the wheel button, state my command, and here it is. No need to take my hand from the wheel, etc...

hahha cool...didnt know you could do that. I was looking for my thread and couldn't find it. I thought I didnt post it , I was confused to say the least.
But ya, i will cut mine. Im going to do this mod. It looks way better then the 08. The 08 iDrive is so plain IMO

The same could be said of the whole M3 interior. But I like it ... no clutter. The thing I'd do is just change the knob, or put something like leather over it. I think the extra buttons are slightly overrated compared to clean lines of the '08. Of course, taking the whole of the '09 iDrive upgrade, the new iDrive is a step up. Just, IMHO. Peace .

I asked my dealership and they said absolutely no way, no how they could swap it out...
Is this hearsay!? Why would they say that!?

As stated many times before... swapping the iDrive components have never been the issue, it is the programming to make it work correctly the real problem.

If everyone believed what their dealers claimed - these forums wouldn't exist.

MY DEALER told me that I couldn't swap my non homelink mirror for a homelink mirror. They said I would need: -reprogramming (1 hour) = est $100 -a special cable = $65 I simply pulled the mirror from a 328 with homelink, and swapped with mine. Didnt need any programming or special cables. SO FUCK WHAT THE DEALER SAYS! they dont know shit!

I've contacted at least 5 difference sources and can not find the center console in stock anywhere.. Not even Germany.
