I can't argue with logic
2.8 is heavy vs 4, no doubt. Depending on the size of kit, it can get quite heavy (I normally walk around with the 70-200 and the 24-70...the brick) I figure if I had a couple more lenses, I'd be crying bc at 3-4 lbs each plus body...it's no runners dream i've done the NYC walk from 90th-->18th-->55th...I'm a determined person haha...but I can't say I could have done it with more than two lenses with me...wouldbe been real nasty, but I'm a sucker for a good workout love the bird pic, the fact that the beak is open really makes it I'll check out the exif on the bee, I never did much macro photography, always been interested though..gotta get cracking on it when are these clowns going to start making cf lenses with lighter glass! Ha...dreams of canon 10-400 f1.2 L.....

umm.... 70-200 f2.8 is literally 2x the weight..
uber, it really depends on what kind of photography you do.. if you do sports a lot and need that extra stop to increase your shutter speed, by all means, go for f2.8. But if you dont have a FF or a 1D or 1Ds body.. and its 21 pt focus point/sensor.. i dont know how much "sports photography" you do.. f4 and f2.8 are both great lens.. and realistcally speaking, normal people just dont carry f2.8 IS around every time they take them out.. I know I wouldnt. Sure I'd take it out for a troll in NYC, but I wouldnt take it on a troll every time I bring out my camera gear.. For me, 70-200mm is to fill my void of long range/tele photography and I'd try to carry the lens with me all the time if possible.. with f2.8, I cant do that, because I dont plan to bring 6-7 lb of gear every time I go out (with a 17-55mm everyday lens + flash + misc gear/filters/cleaners etc...) Think hard on what you're using the lens for at this point. If f2.8 is only say 0.5 lb or even 1 lb heavier.. thats fine... but at 1.7 lb heavier... most pros use a monopod for that much weight with a 1D body. oh well, do let us know your final decision!! (PS, I wouldnt get a used lens... just me, since you never know what could have happened to it or how previous owner used it) Get what you can afford and what you need... dont "over-spend" on a lens that you probably use 40% of the time. Get the 24-70mm f2.8 (if you have FF) or 17-55mm (if you have a crop body). + a 50mm f1.4.. (for 50mm, i really do think f1.4 is more than sufficient and very well built for its price)... and then a 35, 105 or 85mm f1.4.. they just rock! )

Well I do like sports photography but I don't do it as much as I'd like to. Probably more for like candid portraits and stuff. I'm thinking the 2.8 is better because I do a lot of concerts with bad lighting (local Chicago club gigs). I also usually don't bring my camera out with me unless I PLAN to shoot, so I guess the weight isn't as much of an issue for me personally, its not like I'm gonna be walkin around town every night, dragging this thing around. And to be fair... when you say its 2x the weight, you're talking about 1.7lbs.
I mean I can sweat out 1.7lbs in an afternoon game of basketball... so its really not THAT much, maybe for a lens, but its not much. Maybe I'll start suspending 2lb weights on my wrists for an hour, 5x a week so I can train for shooting with it |

Apparently, I'm not imagining things.
70-200mm f/2.8L IS was discontinued recently. http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?o...sku=CA70200ISU http://www.canonrumors.com/2009/07/c...-discontinued/ http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...hread=32449309 Also explains why all of a sudden my local camera shops are actually selling the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS for a lot less than online! |

Yeah, the 7-20 2.8 IS has been hard to find every since the canon rebate issued a couple of months ago. The 5DM2 and all the high priced canon lenses have barely been in stock.

Let me think, the lens is in short supply, so the price is low????
I need to go back to my Economics 201 class to reread the section about supply/demand. Dave

I just bought the 70-200 2.8 IS about a month ago because of the $100 rebate. Maybe that is why they are in short supply. BTW, I really LOVE the lens especially for shooting video.

Yeah, i thought the price of the 70-200 2.8 is was too high, until i rented one for the week. That was enough for me to realize that i needed the lens. Now i'm upset that i spent money renting it

actually no, 1.7lb is the weight of f4 IS. You're looking at 2x that weight, which is 3.4 lbs. So, thats why I say, if you're shooting with your basic gear, you're looking at hauling 7 lb of gear easily or more. Also, the rebate for the 70-200 f2.8IS is actually $200.. so you can get it for $1699 right now!! There were a couple items on ebay going for $1550 with free shipping!!! (and add the 8% cash back), we're talking about only $1400 for the lens! B&H has them in stock and I was just there a couple weeks ago.
