Point is... We don't have numbers from the ones not on the forum. Thread registry is limited to forum memebrs. Actual failure numbers documented by BMWNA is much, much higher.

Can you quote source of such info? Claims like this can be VERY dangerous. Cheers, e46e92

Are you suggesting that dealer serviced cars, which represent the majority of cars, are experiencing much lower failure rates?

No some theorists forget that not all M3 owners are on this forum. You can use the forum as a sampling of M3 owners. For example, if there are 50 failures documented on the forum and 5000 members, then the failure rate is 1% amongst forum members. You cannot take the 50 and compare it to the say 50,000 M3 owners world wide and say the failure rate is .01%.

It's just common sense. If 5% of s65 owners are on this forum, BMW is seeing 20x as many failures as are posted on the forum. Likely nowhere near 5% are on here, so BMW is seeing far more than that.

I'm not quite sure if I'm missing your point....Of course they are seeing higher absolute numbers, but its unlikely that the percentage failure rate that BMW AG sees will be significantly different to that seen in M3post. Our problem is nailing down the actual number of E9x M3 owners out of the 213,000 forum members.

When someone can provide the following facts, then we can move from shooting the shit on the Internet: 1) how many actual failures there are 2) the list of failures broken down into the following info: A) stock vs. modded B) location of failures (broken down by country and the locality) C) number of confirmed M3 owners on this site and proof they are reporting accurately as to their ownership status and if blown, honestly reporting if stock or not D) number of total M3's sold worldwide. Once we have hard numbers then we can go from there. Cheers, e46e92

My local dealer has seen 4 of these, and all 4 cars were bone stock. I don't think there any relation with mods at all-- just hopefully thinking by those who want to think this can't hit them.

Does your dealer think it has anything to do with ridiculous extended OCIs?

Would be interesting to see statistics regarding the failure cases. Could answer some but not all questions. The hardest part is collecting the data from owners which from my brief viewing of this forum reveals that owners are pretty compliant. Running the statistics with a program such as SAS is the easy part as long as you have a statistician that can do it.
I was going to do this for the E46 M3 and the vanos tab failures but collecting the data was much harder since the car was older and there seemed to be more second and third owners than I wanted to deal with. Also, Beisan came out with an affordable solution, so I lost interest. Just something to consider. |

Some do that. People have even leased cars and modded them.
Even easier to do this with the 135/335i that can be tuned for 1/3 more power in 5 minutes with a Cobb AccesPort. |

Exactly! so you cannot say that the car is bone stock when the engine blown. I am sure many owners mod their cars and once they go to dealer for warranty repair, they remove the mods.

Some, anyway. The number of people who mod is a tiny fraction of the number of people who own or lease. There is the possibility that a dealer maintained car with bad bearings was modded, but I would hardly call it a probability.
